9月14日（木曜日） I went down to the Presbyterian Building to meet Dr. Imbrie who was to prepare a concise statement for raising the Meiji Gakuin Endowment fund. He wrote a very good statement. I made a few suggestions. Then we went over to the Reformed Church building and read the statement to Dr. Cobb and Amerman, both of whom heartily approved it and promised to present it to their Board at their next meeting for their approval. We came back to the Presbyterian Board’s room and were invited by Mr. Speer to a lunch and afterwards we went over the statement once more with Mr. Speer who made a few more suggestions. The statement is to be typewritten and then I am to send it to Drs. Hall and Knox for their suggestion. So far everything promises well. 長老派教会に行ってドクター・インブリーに会う。彼は明治学院の寄付基金を集めるための簡潔な声明を準備することになっていた。立派な声明が書き上がっていた。私は少しだが変更の示唆をした。それから共に改革派教会に行き、ドクター・コッブ、アメルマンに声明を読むと、2人とも衷心から同意し、委員会の次回会合でこれを読み、承認を求めることを約束してくれた。 私たちは長老派の委員会室へと戻り、ミスター・スピアから昼食に招かれ、その後もう一度、ミスター・スピアと声明を見直し、彼がまた少し訂正案を出した。この声明はまずタイプライターで清書し、それから私がドクター・ホールおよびノックスに送って、訂正箇所があるか確認するのである。今のところすべて順調に行きそうだ。

6月16日 Called at the office International Committee. Mr. Mott is not in the city. Met Mr. McBarry. Then called at the Reformed Church House 25 East 22nd st. found Drs. Amerman and Cobb. Dr. A. invited me to come over to his house tonight. Met Mr. ［Beoch?］ who took me to an［sic］ restaurant. Dropt［sic］ in the Y.M.C.A. Reading Room and read papers. Came over with Dr. Am. To his house in Bloomfield and met Mrs. A. and the children. 国際委員会のオフィスを訪問する。ミスター・モットは市内にいなかった。ミスター・マクバリーに会った。その後、東22丁目25番地にあるリフォームド・チャーチハウスを訪れたところ、ドクター・アメルマンとドクター・コッブに会えた。ドクター・Aは今夜彼の家に来るよう招いてくれた。ミスター・ビオチにも初めて会う。レストランに連れて行ってくれた。YMCAの読書室に寄って新聞をいくつか読んだ。ドクター・Amと共にブルームフィールドにある彼の家に行き、ミセス・Aと子どもたちに会った。

六月十七日（火） Yesterday afternoon a telegram came from Viscount Chinda inviting me to dinner tonight but had to decline it on account of my engagement with Dr. Goucher this noon. Went to the club on time and took lunch with Drs. Goucher, Burlin, Mott and Shailer. There was with us Mr. Williams of Nankin University. He spoke first and then I spoke. Asked Committee opinion in regard to the Union in［the］college department. They favor union［s］. Then I said what was needed most is men in this country who will give his life for it. Dr. G. at first did not agree but Dr. B. and M. thought I was right about it. ［欄外］I had only 20 minutes or so to speak & answer questions. 昨日は午後に珍田子爵から電報で今日の夕食への誘いがあったが、ドクター・ガウチャーと昼に約束があったため、やむなくお断りした。時間通りにクラブに行き、昼食をとる、いずれもドクター・ガウチャー、ドクター・バーリン、モットとシャイラーも一緒だった。南京大学のミスター・ウィリアムズも同席した。まず彼が話し、その後私が話す。大学部門の連合に関して委員会の意見を聞いた。連合に賛成とのことだ。私は、さらに必要なのは、この国のために、命を捧げる人々だと言った。ドクター・Ｇは、はじめは賛成しなかったが、ドクター・ＢとＭは私の言うことは正しいと考えた。 ［欄外］私が話して質問に答えるのに、20分しかなかった。

June 14th, Tuesday I enjoyed a quiet night. After breakfast went to the office and paid my fee （10 S） and obtained the delegates’ ticket, reports &c. &c. Met Mr. Oldham. I find I was put on the Business Committee which met on Saturday and Monday, but I did not know it until yesterday. At 3 p. m. the Conference began with a business meeting. Lord Belfour［sic］ presided. The Business Committee appointed and Standing orders and rules for debate were adopted, and officers were appointed. At 5 p. m. all delegates were invited to the Honorary Graduation Ceremonial of the Univ. of Edinburgh. Mr. Chatterjee of India and Mr. R. E. Speer among others received the degree of D. D. and Harada and Mr. Mott received L. L. D. There was a large crowd to witness the Ceremony. Evidently the honor was confered the signalize the Conference because the recipients are all delegates of the Conference and were chosen representing different nationalities. The Vice Chancellor and the members of the Faculties and those who received the honor all wore gowns of different color. In the evening the opening meeting of the Conference was held. A Message from the King was read by the Chairman while the whole Conference listened standing and “God save the King” was sung. The Chairman gave an opening address which was very good. He was followed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Dr. Speer. The Archbishop’s address was very good. The meeting closed at 9.30. 静かな夜を楽しんだ。朝食後に事務所まで行き、参加費（10ドル）を支払い、代表者用のチケットや報告書等を手に入れた。ミスター・オールダムに会った。昨日はじめて知ったのだが、私は土曜日と月曜日に集まる予定の運営委員会の一員に含まれていた。 大会は午後3時の運営会議から始まった。バルフォア卿が進行を務めた。運営委員会が設けられ、大会規則や議論のルールが採用され、各役職が選任された。 午後5時には、代表者一同がエディンバラ大学の名誉卒業式に招待された。 インドのミスター・チャッタルジーやミスター・R・E・スピア等が名誉神学博士号を、原田とミスター・モットが法学博士号を授与された。式典の様子を見守るために大勢の人が集まっていた。これらの名誉学位の授与は、授与された者が皆この大会の代表者であり、様々な国籍を象徴するように選ばれていたため、本大会に注目を集めるために行われたことは明白だ。総長や教職員たち、そして名誉学位を授与された者たちは皆、別の色のガウンを着ていた。 夜には大会の初回会議が行われた。議長は王からの挨拶を読み上げ、大会参加者一同は立ったままそれを聞き、その後「God save the King」を歌った。議長は素晴らしい開会の挨拶も披露した。その後カンタベリー大主教とドクター・スピアが続いた。大主教の挨拶は非常に良かった。会議は9時半に終了した。

June 15th, Wednesday After devotional session for a quarter of an hour the Conference began with the consideration of Reports of Commission I “Carrying the Gospel to all the new-Christian world.” Mr. Mott as the Chairman of the commission made a very powerful speech. He was followed by a number of men who represented different counties. Mr. Chiba and Dr. Davis spoke for Japan. 12.35-1 p.m. Intercession meeting which was very impressive. 2.30-4.30 The consideration of Report of Commission I was continued. A lady made a very good 7 minute speech on the Extension of Christianity Empire sizing the social side of it. Mr. Speer too made a very good one emphasizing the individual side of it. As a member of the Business Committee I was asked to sit on the platform. In the evening the Hon. Seth Low presided. Prof. Paterson of the Edinburgh University on Christianity as the final and universal region as Redemption and Dr. Coffin on the same subject in its Ethical Ideal. The latter is by fair a better speaker. His speech was a very strong impeachment of modern civilization falling short of the Christian Ethical Ideal. 15分間の祈りの会の後に大会が始まり、まずは第一委員会の報告書、「非キリスト教世界のすべてに福音を伝えること」について検討した。 委員会の議長であるミスター・モットが非常に力強い演説をした。その後、様々な国の代表者たちが続いた。ミスター・千葉とドクター・デイヴィスも日本の代表として演説した。午後12時35分から午後1時は他者のために神に祈る執り成しの祈りが行われ、非常に印象的だった。2時半から4時半は引き続き第一委員会の報告書についての検討が行われた。とある女性が、キリスト教帝国の拡大について、その社会的側面における影響の大きさを測る7分間の素晴らしい演説を行った。ミスター・スピアも、その様々な側面について強調した非常に良い演説を行った。 私は運営委員会の一員として壇上に座るよう頼まれた。 夜にはセス・ロウ閣下が進行を務めた。エディンバラ大学のパターソン教授が贖罪としての究極かつ普遍的な宗教という観点からキリスト教を語り、ドクター・コフィンも同じ主題を倫理的な理想という観点から語った。後者の方が圧倒的に話し上手だった。彼の演説はキリスト教の倫理的な理想に遠く及ばない現代文明を強く非難するものだった。

8月28日（月曜日） By appointment I went down town to meet Dr. Imbrie at his nephew’s office at No.18 Jersey St. We sat down in the St. Paul’s Churchyard for nearly two hours talking over different matters. Then we went to in the Park Row building to get our lunch. After that he took me to the office of his old friend Mr. W. E. Stiger who is a member of the Board of Foreign Missions. After seeing the Aquarium which is a good one we called at the Reformed church building and saw Drs. Cobb and Amerman. Dr. Amerman changed considerably in his appearance. He looks very much older; his beard is nearly white. No wonder he has aged. Mrs. Amerman has been insane for some years. She does not know her own daughters and son. She only vauely knows her husband. I felt very sorry for him. He is living alone in Blooms field. He says he is very lonely. …… Mr. J. Ballagh called at the club. 約束した上でドクター・インブリーに会いに行く、場所はジャージー・ストリート18番にある甥御さんのオフィスである。セント・ポール教会の中庭に座して2時間近くもさまざまなことを話し合った。その後はパーク・ロウのビルに行って昼食をとる。食後、彼の旧友で海外宣教委員会のメンバーであるミスター・W・E・スタイガーのオフィスを共に訪ねる。立派な水族館も見物、それから改革派教会でコッブおよびアメルマンの両ドクターに会った。ドクター・アメルマンは外見がずいぶん変化していた。かなり歳をとられたように見え、顎鬚などほぼ真っ白だ。歳をとってはない。ミセス・アメルマンはもう何年も脳を患っている。実の娘たちや息子もわからないそうだ。夫だけはぼんやりと認識するようである。大変気の毒に感じた。彼はブルームス・フィールドに一人住まいしている。非常に寂しいと語っておられた。……ミスター・J・バラがクラブに訪ねて来た。

9月19日（火曜日） ［In the afternoon （Sep. 18） I went to Englewood, N.J.to speak for the ladies’ missionary society, of which Mrs. Speer is the president. I spoke on the subject what Christianity has done for the women of Japan? There were fifty or more ladies present.］ Returned from Englewood. In the afternoon I went to Waldorf Astoria with the deputation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Boards of Foreign missions to express sympathy for Baron Komura’s illness and to present congratulations on the conclusion of peace with Russia. There were Dr. Hepburn, Dr. Cobb and a dozen other men. Dr. Richard was the spokesman. Mr. Sato received them. ［（9月18日の）午後に私はニュージャージー州イングルウッドへ行った。ミセス・スピアが会長をつとめる女性宣教協会で話すためだ。私は日本の女性にキリスト教がどう貢献したかという題で話した。50人かそれ以上の婦人が出席していた。］イングルウッドから戻る。午後にはウォルドーフ・アストリアに、長老派と改革派海外宣教委員会の代表と共に行き、小村男爵へのお見舞いと、ロシアと和平が成立したことへの祝辞を述べる。ドクター・へボンやドクター・コッブ、他に10名以上が来た。ドクター・リチャードがスポークスマンである。ミスター・佐藤が応対した。

一月十一日（月）　晴 荒川へ静江子結婚祝ノ印トシテ金三十円ヲ贈ル。 健次ヨリニウヨルク発ノはがき到着、東部諸大学見学ノ後再ビロツチエスタルニ往キ、而シテ三月四日横浜着ノ天洋丸ニテ帰朝ノ筈ナリ。 午後、長尾半平氏ヲ日本クラブニ訪ヒ、ドクトルモツト氏ヨリノ来信即チ今年デンマルク及フヒンランドニ開会ノ青年会同盟ニ斎藤惣一氏ノ出席ヲ促セル件ニ付協議シ、ソレヨリ神田青年会［館］ニ斎藤氏ヲ訪ネ、同件ニ付意見ヲ尋ネタルニ大抵出席可能ノ見込ナリ。又同盟ニ帰ルコトモ若シ其時招アルレバ帰ラン、但同盟委員ノ空気一変ヲ要スト云ヘリ。

一月十八日（月）　曇 今日コソハ雪カト思シニ降ラズ。只地上ノ霜ノ雪ノ如ク白キノミ。 真澄米国留学志望ノ件ニ付ドクトルスピーヤ氏へ長文ノ書状ヲ認メ、ソノ援助ヲ求メタリ。 健次ヨリクリスマス認メニウヨルク発ノ書状到着。愈健康、米国東部諸大学見学ノ上、再ビロチエスターへ赴キ或未了ノ実験ヲ完成シ、二月十四日発ノ天洋丸ニテ帰朝ノ趣ナリ。 午後三時、昨日死去セル和泉弥六氏ノ葬儀ニ会葬ス。同氏、神学部卒業ノ後三四年伝道ニ従事シ、尓来実業界ニ身ヲ投シタル人ナリ。性質温和親切ノ人ナリ。

一月十九日（火）　雨後晴 久振ニテ雨降ル。 授業如例。 健次ヘ長文ノ返書ヲ出ス。 木村良夫々婦ヨリ乍延引クリスマス祝トシテ羽根蒲団一枚ヲ贈来ル。 ドクトルスピヤ氏ニ宛真澄渡米遊学ノ志望ニ付長文ノ書簡ヲ出ス。若シモ同氏ノ紹介ニ依リ遊学ノ便宜ヲ得バ幸甚ナリ。

一月二十二日（金）　快晴 寒気強。 午前、揮毫。 小林盛政氏来訪。 鷲山氏ノ依頼ニヨリ明治学院中学部Y M C A主催五年級送別会ニ出席、一場ノ講話ヲナス。ドクトルシヨンアールモツトノ話ヲ為ス。 田嶋進氏来訪、依例楽天的ノ好人物ナリ。 夕刻、木村良夫来訪、真澄ヲ診察ス。別ニ異条ナシ。発汗ハアスピリンノ為ナルベケレバ、之ヲ廃シ健胃剤ニ代ルコトトナス。

三月二十三日（火）　晴 午前、スピーヤ氏へ礼状ヲ出ス。アイグルハート氏ノ推薦状ヲ同封ス。 ソレヨリ倉辻家ヲ訪問シ両親ニ面会、明日葬儀ノ打合セヲ為シ且桜井女史ニモ面会シテナグサメタリ。 ソレヨリ片山ニ往キ、午餐ノ振舞ヲ受ケ、帰途、沼澤ヲ訪問シタルニ墓参ニ往キタル由ニテ不在ナリキ。 夕刻ヨリ木村夫婦来リ、風呂ニ入リ緩々話シテ帰ル。
