8月16日（水曜日） Kawai and Ishikawa called and we together went to the Japanese Consulate. The Consul Uchida received us kindly and handed us Mr. Chinda’s letter with its enclosure. Mr. Ishikawa kindly offered to go to the Bank and get exchanged our money. We went to a Chinese Restaurant and enjoyed a Chinese dinner. Then we went to the Y.M.C.A. building on W. 23rd St. Nobody whom we knew was there. We found out also Mr. Mott was not in town. I went then with Mr. Kawai to the Dutch Reformed Church House on East 22nd St. Dr. Amerman was not there but Dr. Cobb was. I found several letters waiting for me in the office. We went over to the Presbyterian Building. Saw Dr. Gavet and Miss Dickie, Mr. Speer’s secretary. I got some more letters. カワイとイシカワが来て、一緒に日本領事館へ行く。内田領事が迎え、また館内でミスター・珍田からの手紙を渡してくれた。ミスター・イシカワが銀行に行って私たちのために両替をしてきてくれるという。中華料理店に行き、料理を堪能した。その後西23丁目のYMCAに行くが、私たちの知人は誰もいなかった。ミスター・モットもまた街を留守にしていると知った。私はその後ミスター・カワイと東22丁目のオランダ改革派のチャーチハウスに行く。ドクター・アメルマンは不在だったが、ドクター・コッブがいた。事務所に私あての手紙が何通か待っていた。長老派の建物に行く。ドクター・ギャヴェットとミスター・スピアの秘書のミス・ディッキーにも会う。さらに何通か手紙を受け取った。

8月28日（月曜日） By appointment I went down town to meet Dr. Imbrie at his nephew’s office at No.18 Jersey St. We sat down in the St. Paul’s Churchyard for nearly two hours talking over different matters. Then we went to in the Park Row building to get our lunch. After that he took me to the office of his old friend Mr. W. E. Stiger who is a member of the Board of Foreign Missions. After seeing the Aquarium which is a good one we called at the Reformed church building and saw Drs. Cobb and Amerman. Dr. Amerman changed considerably in his appearance. He looks very much older; his beard is nearly white. No wonder he has aged. Mrs. Amerman has been insane for some years. She does not know her own daughters and son. She only vauely knows her husband. I felt very sorry for him. He is living alone in Blooms field. He says he is very lonely. …… Mr. J. Ballagh called at the club. 約束した上でドクター・インブリーに会いに行く、場所はジャージー・ストリート18番にある甥御さんのオフィスである。セント・ポール教会の中庭に座して2時間近くもさまざまなことを話し合った。その後はパーク・ロウのビルに行って昼食をとる。食後、彼の旧友で海外宣教委員会のメンバーであるミスター・W・E・スタイガーのオフィスを共に訪ねる。立派な水族館も見物、それから改革派教会でコッブおよびアメルマンの両ドクターに会った。ドクター・アメルマンは外見がずいぶん変化していた。かなり歳をとられたように見え、顎鬚などほぼ真っ白だ。歳をとってはない。ミセス・アメルマンはもう何年も脳を患っている。実の娘たちや息子もわからないそうだ。夫だけはぼんやりと認識するようである。大変気の毒に感じた。彼はブルームス・フィールドに一人住まいしている。非常に寂しいと語っておられた。……ミスター・J・バラがクラブに訪ねて来た。

9月4日（月曜日） This is the so-called “Labor Day” something like the “Bank Holy Day” in London. Unfortunately for the men it rained very hard the whole morning. The conference was still in session but I left Bronxville by 10.10 train for the city because I had an appointment to meet Drs. Knox and Imbrie at the Century Club, 7W. 43rd St. I was delayed a little by the big procession of the workmen in the 5th Ave. and when I got to the club they were already talking about on the topic of our coming together, namely the present situation of the missionary or rather Christian work in Japan in general and the future policy and endowment fund for Meiji Gakuin in particular. After a full talk I was glad to find that we were all agreed on the important point in regard to the future policy of the Dendo work and Meiji Gakuin, that is, in one word, the Japanese control of the work in order to make it a really Japanese one. And in regard to the latter, the solution of the problem was an endowment large enough to be free from an annual subsidy an appropriation from the mission boards. Dr. Knox is to see Dr. Hall to secure his support in the movement and Dr. Imbrie and myself to see Mr. Speer to secure the support of the Presbyterian board. 本日はいわゆる「レイバー・デー」、ロンドンの「バンク・ホリディ」にあたる休日である。労働者たちには気の毒なことに、午前中はずっと大雨であった。まだ大会は開催中だが、私はブロンクスビルを10時10分の列車で出て【ニューヨーク】市に向かう。ノックス、インブリー両ドクターに西43丁目7番のセンチュリー・クラブで会う予約があった。5番街で大規模な労働者の行進があったため、少し遅れた。私がクラブに着いたときには、2人はすでに話し合いを初めていた、テーマは私たちの協力事項について、すなわち日本における宣教というよりキリスト教活動の一般的な現状と、将来の方針、そして特に明治学院への寄付基金問題である。 よく話し合った結果、嬉しいことに重要な点については全員合意した。「伝道」活動の将来の方針、そして明治学院については一言でいえば真に日本の機関にするために日本人が運営するということ。後者の問題は、宣教委員会からの毎年の補助金なしでもやっていける程度の大きな寄付があれば解決する。ドクター・ノックスはドクター・ホールに会ってこの動きへの支持を取りつけることになり、ドクター・インブリーと私はミスター・スピアに会って長老派委員会の支援を求めることになった。

九月二十六日（金） 授業如例。 午後、理事相談会ヲ開キ、学院拡張案訂正ヲナシ、理事長イムブリー氏ヨリ直接ニスピヤー氏ニ送達スルコトトナス。

十二月五日（金） 出院如例。 イムブリー氏辞職ニ付、過去四十二年間同氏ガ神学教育ノ為ニ尽力シタルソノ功労ニ対シテ感謝ノ意ヲ表スル決議文ヲスピーヤ氏ニ送ル。 午後、山本邦之助氏来訪。昨夜、東京青年会理事会ヨリ一切ノ兼務ヲ辞シ、専心本会ノ事業ノ為ニ尽力スベシトノ勧告ヲ受ケタリトノ話アリ。且日疋氏副理事長ニ挙ゲラレ、小松武治、加藤冬作ノ二氏常務理事ニ挙ゲラレタリトノコトナリ。

十月二十五日（月） 授業如例。 来ル廿九日、スピヤー、チヤンバレン両氏ト会見ノ条件ニ付、イムブリー、オルトマンス、ライシヤー氏ト協議ヲナス。

四月二日（金） 休業。 キリスト教ト他ノ宗教トノ関係トニ関スルスピーヤ氏ノ書状ニ対スル長文ノ書状ノ為ニ一日ヲ費ス。イムブリー氏ニ英文ノ校正ヲ依頼ス。

8月23日（水曜日） I went to Dr. G.W. Knox’s house in Pelham Manor N.Y. He invited me to come and stay over the night. Pelham Manor is a very pretty place. We had a very interesting talk with over matters old and new. He promises to help me in raising an endowment fund for the Meiji Gakuin. He thinks if the institution can be put on a right basis, that is, if it can become a real Japanese institution as it was intended at first, the endowment can be raised without much difficulty. He promises to secure Dr. Hall’s help in the matter. The things look very hopeful. If the thing can be done, it will not only a greet financial help to the institution, but it will put a new soul into it. If God grant me, as I hope and pray, another ten years of life on earth, I will spend it for Meiji Gakuin. With all my short comings I think I can honestly say that I have tried to do my best. And it is nearly 13 years since I was made the President and nearly 25 years since I was called as an instructor in the theological school. But in order to do my best I need a reasonable confidence in the future development of the institution. If the school is to remain a mere “mission school,” as in the past, there is not much ground for the hope of vigorous growth in the future. As long as it is a foreign school, Japanese will not naturally look upon it as their own and thus the school will fail to win their hearty sympathy and support. The problem before me now is how to make Meiji Gakuin a real Japanese Christian institution as it was originally intended, as it clearly stated in the original plan of organization. The first need is an endowment fund large enough to secure its financial independence. And now is the time to start it. Now or never. I was glad to see Dr. Knox throughly in sympathy with my views on the subject. He wants to talk over the matter with Dr. Imbrie and myself. He invited us to dine with him at the Century Club on Monday after next. What will he say? What will the Board say on the question? That is to be seen. ニューヨーク州ペラムマナーにドクター・G・W・ノックスの自宅を訪ねる。彼に1晩泊まるようにと誘われていた。ペラムマナーは大変きれいな街である。昔話から最新の話題まで、楽しく語り合う。彼は明治学院のために寄付基金を募ることを約束してくれた。学校が正しい基盤を築けば、すなわち、元々の構想通り、真の日本の教育機関となれば、寄付はそれほどの困難もなく集められるだろうと彼は考えている。この件でドクター・ホールの協力を取りつけることを約束してくれた。前途に非常に希望が持てる。もし実現すれば、多大な財政上の助けとなるばかりでない、新たな魂が込められることだろう。もし神が私の願いをかなえて、あと10年の寿命を与えてくれたならば、私は明治学院のために尽力しよう。ここまでの私の短い活動でも、すべてにおいてベストを尽くしたと正直にいえる。私が総理になって13年近く、神学学校の教師として招かれてからはほぼ25年になる。 だがベストを尽くすにも、この学校の将来についてある程度の自信が必要だ。学校がこのまま「ミッション・スクール」の地位に留まるならば、将来において力強い成長はあまり望めなかろう。外国の学校のままであれば、日本人は自分たちの学校と考えず、ゆえに国民の心からの共感と支持は得られない。そこで私の直面する問題は、明治学院をいかに真の日本のキリスト教【教育】機関にするかということだ。それは最初の創立計画に明記されている。まず必要なのが、経済的自立が保証されるに十分な寄付基金である。今がそれを始める時である。今しかない。 ドクター・ノックスが完全に私の意見に共感してくれたことが実に嬉しい。彼はこの件をドクター・インブリーと私を交えて話したいという。私たちを再来週の月曜日にセンチュリー・クラブでの晩餐に招いてくれた。彼は何というだろうか。委員会はこの件に何というだろうか。それは今後わかるだろう。

9月7日（木曜日） Heard from Mr. Speer. He wants to meet me and Dr. Imbrie tomorrow morning and have a full talk on Meiji Gakuin and the general situation of the evangelistic work in Japan. Evening papers have very serious telegrams from ［Tokyo］. ……But the worst and incredible report is that ten Christian churches and a mission school are burnt down. If the reports are true, it is serious indeed. ミスター・スピアから連絡があった。私とドクター・インブリーに明朝会いたい、そして明治学院や日本での伝道活動全般についてしっかり話し合いたいということだ。 夕刊には［東京］からの非常に厳しい電報が載った。……驚くべき最悪の報告は、キリスト教の教会が10堂、ミッション・スクールが1校、焼き討ちに遭ったというものだ。報告が真実であるなら、非常に深刻な事態だ。

9月8日（金曜日） Saw Mr. Speer in his office and together with Dr. Imbrie had a full talk about Meiji Gakuin and the general situation of missionary work in Japan. We talked from 10 to 4 o’clock with a short interval for chapel meeting and lunch. He seems to take in the situation very well and willing to do all in his power to help the cause. It was a very satisfactory interview altogether. He is also going to make all the appointments for my speaking in different churches. Today’s telegrams say things are quieting down in Tokyo. But I am very sorry to see among other things that the Asakusa and Ryogoku churches are destroyed. There seems to have been no such trouble in Shiba-ku or Kojimach-ku or Ushigome, but only in Honjo, Shitaya, Asakusa, Nihonbashi, and Kanda. The papers here do not express very great surprise but some of them remind the public that just hundred and ten years ago there was a similar riot in New York about a treaty with Great Britain which was signed by Jay, Alexander Hamilton in defending the treaty was stoned and struck. ミスター・スピアをオフィスに訪ね、ドクター・インブリーも交えて明治学院や日本での布教活動全般について詳しく話し合う。教会での打ち合わせと昼食のための短い休憩をはさみながら、10時から4時まで話した。スピア氏は今の状況をよく理解しているようで、大義のためにできることは喜んでしようという態度である。すべて満足のいく会見であった。彼はまた、私がスピーチをする数々の教会の予約をすべてとってくれることになった。 本日の電報によれば、東京の騒乱は治まってきている。しかし、いろいろあった中でも浅草と両国の教会が破壊されてしまったことは実に遺憾だ。こんな騒動は芝区や麹町区、牛込には起こっていないようだ。本所や下谷、浅草、日本橋、神田だけで起きた。 こちらの新聞はさほど驚いていないが、いくつか、ニューヨークでも110年前に似たようなことがあったと指摘する声がある。ジェイが調印した大英帝国との条約締結時の暴動だ。条約を擁護したアレクサンダー・ハミルトンはひどく弾劾された。

9月19日（火曜日） ［In the afternoon （Sep. 18） I went to Englewood, N.J.to speak for the ladies’ missionary society, of which Mrs. Speer is the president. I spoke on the subject what Christianity has done for the women of Japan? There were fifty or more ladies present.］ Returned from Englewood. In the afternoon I went to Waldorf Astoria with the deputation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Boards of Foreign missions to express sympathy for Baron Komura’s illness and to present congratulations on the conclusion of peace with Russia. There were Dr. Hepburn, Dr. Cobb and a dozen other men. Dr. Richard was the spokesman. Mr. Sato received them. ［（9月18日の）午後に私はニュージャージー州イングルウッドへ行った。ミセス・スピアが会長をつとめる女性宣教協会で話すためだ。私は日本の女性にキリスト教がどう貢献したかという題で話した。50人かそれ以上の婦人が出席していた。］イングルウッドから戻る。午後にはウォルドーフ・アストリアに、長老派と改革派海外宣教委員会の代表と共に行き、小村男爵へのお見舞いと、ロシアと和平が成立したことへの祝辞を述べる。ドクター・へボンやドクター・コッブ、他に10名以上が来た。ドクター・リチャードがスポークスマンである。ミスター・佐藤が応対した。

9月27日（水曜日） I went to the G. Central station to see Baron Komura off. He looked very pale and thin. But for sometime before the train left he stood at the rear platform of the train talking with friends. In the afternoon Drs. Hall, Knox and Imbrie and I were invited by Mr. D. Willis James to dine at his country house in Madison, N.Y. We three took 3.25 train from N.Y. and Dr. Imbrie joined us at Newark. Mr. James has a beautiful place, beautiful trees and lawns about his house. The house is like one of English mansions. He showed us his garden and hot houses. Then we talked about the general situation of Christian work in Japan. He takes deep interest, showing sympathy with the national movements. He asked once about the Endowment of Meiji Gakuin and I thought it was a very good time to speak of it. But Dr. Hall cautioned us not to speak of it tonight. So I could not do so. We had a nice dinner and returned by 8 o’clock train. Dr. Hall advises me to write Mr. James asking for an interview in his office and then I could get his help in the matter of endowment. グランドセントラル駅に小村男爵を見送る。大変顔色が悪く痩せていた。だが彼は列車が出る少し前に列車の最後尾のデッキに立ち、友人らと語ることはできた。 午後、ドクター・ホールとノックス、インブリーと私はミスター・D・ウィリス・ジェームズと晩餐をとるために、彼のニューヨーク州マディソンのカントリーハウスへ赴く。3人で3時25分の列車でニューヨークを発ち、ニューアークからはドクター・インブリーが加わった。ミスター・ジェームズの邸宅はすばらしい。美しい木々と芝生に囲まれている。英国の屋敷のような佇まいである。庭や温室に案内してもらう。その後、日本でのキリスト教活動の全般的な状況について話し合った。彼は非常に興味を持ってくれ、全国的な運動に共感を示してくれた。一度明治学院の寄付について質問されたため、これは説明の好機だと思った。しかしドクター・ホールに今夜はまだ時期でないと止められたため、話せずに終わる。晩餐をご馳走になり、8時の列車で帰った。 ドクター・ホールは私に、ミスター・ジェームズに手紙を書いて彼のオフィスでの面会を乞うことを勧める。そうして初めて寄付の件で助力を求められるという。
