8月18日（金曜日） We took the 10.2 train from the Grand Central for Portsmouth, N.H. arrived at Boston a little after took 4. Mr. Takasugi was at the station to meet us. We took 4.44 train from the North Station and arrived here in Portsmouth 6.40. we came to the Hotel Rockingham, which was recommended to us by Mr. Sakai in New York City. After supper we engaged a carriage to take us to the Hotel Wentworth, New Castle, where Baron Komura and his suite are stopping. We saw Mr. Sato ［Aimaro］ and Mr. Kumataro Honda, but the Baron was engaged and wanted to call on him tomorrow at 10 o’clock. The hotel is a large building but it is fully crowded. There are more than 100 newspaper reporters all anxious to catch the latest news of the peace negotiation. There are many ladies too. Nearly all the papers that I have seen here are pessimistic, but Mr. Sato seemed the other way. Has he any good reasons for his hope? The Envoys have adjourned till Tuesday next. The ostentatious reason given for it is an accumulation of the clerical business but the real reason is to wait for replies from Tokyo and St. Petersburg on the four points on which they cannot agree: namely, 1. The cession of Sakhalin 2. Remuneration for the cost of the war （Indemnity） 3. The surrender of interned warships in neutral ports. 4. The limitation of Russia’s naval power in Pacific waters. Other points seen to have been substantially agreed. グランドセントラル駅から10時2分のニューハンプシャー州ポーツマスに向けて列車に乗る。4時過ぎにボストンに着く。ミスター・タカスギが駅に出迎えてくれる。ノース駅から4時44分の列車で、ポーツマスに6時40分に到着した。ニューヨークでミスター・サカイに勧められたホテル・ロッキンガムに泊まる。 夕食後に馬車を雇ってニュー・キャッスルのホテル・ウェントワースに出かける。ここに小村男爵の一行が滞在している。ミスター・佐藤〔愛麿〕とミスター・本多熊太郎に会ったが、男爵は用があったため、また明日の10時に出直すことにする。ずいぶん大きなホテルだが、満員の状態だ。新聞記者が100人以上もいて、皆、和平交渉の新たな情報を得ようと待ち構えている。女性も多くいる。ここで見た新聞のほとんどが悲観的だが、ミスター・佐藤の考えは逆だという。そのような希望に何か確固たる根拠があるのだろうか。特命使節団による交渉は火曜日まで休止となった。表向きの理由は事務上の仕事が溜まっているためということだが、真の理由は東京とサンクトペテルブルクからの返答を待っているのである。合意が難しい4点についてである、すなわち： 1．サハリンの割譲 2．戦争による損害の賠償〔賠償金〕 3．中立港にいるロシア艦艇の引渡し 4．太平洋海域におけるロシア海軍力の制限。 これら以外の点については概ね合意に至っているようだ。

9月19日（火曜日） ［In the afternoon （Sep. 18） I went to Englewood, N.J.to speak for the ladies’ missionary society, of which Mrs. Speer is the president. I spoke on the subject what Christianity has done for the women of Japan? There were fifty or more ladies present.］ Returned from Englewood. In the afternoon I went to Waldorf Astoria with the deputation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Boards of Foreign missions to express sympathy for Baron Komura’s illness and to present congratulations on the conclusion of peace with Russia. There were Dr. Hepburn, Dr. Cobb and a dozen other men. Dr. Richard was the spokesman. Mr. Sato received them. ［（9月18日の）午後に私はニュージャージー州イングルウッドへ行った。ミセス・スピアが会長をつとめる女性宣教協会で話すためだ。私は日本の女性にキリスト教がどう貢献したかという題で話した。50人かそれ以上の婦人が出席していた。］イングルウッドから戻る。午後にはウォルドーフ・アストリアに、長老派と改革派海外宣教委員会の代表と共に行き、小村男爵へのお見舞いと、ロシアと和平が成立したことへの祝辞を述べる。ドクター・へボンやドクター・コッブ、他に10名以上が来た。ドクター・リチャードがスポークスマンである。ミスター・佐藤が応対した。

四月二十二日（土） 天気晴朗、内地ニハ見難キ天気ナリ。 新聞ヲ開キ見ルニ、桂及ビ徳大寺ハ公爵ニ、小村ハ侯爵ニ、渡辺、寺内ハ伯爵ニナリタリトアリ。朝鮮合併ノ賞ト条約改正ノ功カ。ソレニシテモ徳大寺ト渡辺ハ如何。 午前十一時、旅順ヲ辞シ、大連ニ帰リ、千村春次氏ノ宅ニ投ス。同氏ハ教会ノ長老ナリ。 夜、大連教会ニ於テ説教ヲナス。聴衆ハ六七十人ト見受ク。雲左エ門ヤラ、艦隊ノ入港ヤラノ為ニ妨ケラレタリト云ヘリ。説教後、宮川、守瀬氏等宿ニ来ル。

十一月二十六日（日） 午後、沼澤氏ヲ訪問ス。病気ハ既ニ快復ノ由ニテ、来客中ナリキ。 木村ニ立寄リ晩食ヲ喫シテ後、青山教会ニ往キ説教ヲナス。 侯爵小村壽太郎氏、肺患ニテ死ス。一般ニ惜マル。

十二月二日（土） 午後一時三十分、故外務大臣侯爵小村壽太郎氏ノ葬式ニ会葬ス。京浜ニ於ケル内外官民ノ人物ハ殆ンド洩ナク青山ニ（ノ）式場ニ集リ、両陛下始メ皇族以下寄贈ノ榊、花輪等無数、実ニ盛ナル葬式ナリ。国葬ニハアラザレトモ、伊藤公以後ノ盛ナル葬式ナリ。 式場ヨリ直チニ奥野昌綱翁一周年紀念会ニ出席ス。会場ハ青山教会ナリ。 夜、都留仙次氏、三谷民子、原某来車、九時比辞シ去ル。都留氏紹介ノ為ナリ。

July 7th, Thursday Wrote several letters, one to home. Wrote to Dr. Brown as Dr. Goucher suggested. Then a letter came from Dr. Fulton saying that he has already arranged for a conference next Monday afternoon at 2.30 at the Pres. Building. So I had to write to Dr. Brown again after it. Wrote to Dr. Goucher too. I was asked to speak a few words at the meeting of the board of managers of the American Bible Society. And I did so. There were present ten members besides the president, secretary and the treasurer. They were all old men between 70 and 80. Each member seemed to be as venerable as the society itself. Stopped at the Pres. Building on my way back but Dr. Fulton was not there. Met for a moment Dr. Houley. In the evening Bishop Honda and Mr. and Mrs. Sato, the Methodist preacher and his wife called and we had a rather enjoyable time. It was very close and hot this afternoon but now as I am writing 11 p.m. it began to rain. It is a good rain. 手紙を何通か書く。自宅にも一通書く。ガウチャ博士の提案に従い、ブラウン博士にも書いた。するとフルトン博士から手紙が来て、すでに土曜の午後2時30分に長老派教会ビルでの会合をアレンジしたと言う。そこでブラウン博士に再び手紙を書くはめになった。ガウチャ博士にも書いた。米国聖書協会の幹部会で少し話をして欲しいと頼まれた。引き受ける。議長、書記、会計係とは別に10名のメンバーがいた。みな70歳から80歳の間の高齢男性だった。どのメンバーも、協会自体と同様、尊敬すべき人たちのようにみえた。 帰路、長老派教会ビルに立ち寄ったがフルトン博士は不在だった。ハウリー博士と短時間だが顔を合わせた。 夜、ホンダ監督、メソジストの牧師のミスター・サトウ夫妻が来訪、楽しい時間を少々過ごす。 午後は蒸し暑かったが、これを書いている午後11時の今、雨が降り始めた。よき雨だ。

July 12th, Tuesday Another hot day. Not feeling very well. There was a funeral of a Japanese clerk in the consulate and I was asked to take part with Sato but I excused myself. またも暑い一日。気分が優れない。日本領事館で日本人職員の葬儀があり、佐藤とともに出席するよう依頼されていたが、辞退した。

8月19日（土曜日） We started for Wentworth, and while we were waiting for an electric car a gentleman came along in an automobile and invited us to ride with him to the hotel, as he was going to the same place. So we had a fine automobile ride. When we lighted from the automobile, I met Mr. Honda who came here representing the “Kokumin”. We saw Baron Komura and Mr. Takahira separately in their rooms. Baron was in high spirit. We told him about the kind welcome that was given to us everywhere in Europe. When we told him that Hague was the only place where they did not openly express their sympathy for Japan, he told us something which goes long way to explain the facts, namely, he said it was feared that the Baltic fleet will probably stay in Java and it took some stringent precautions to prevent it. Perhaps those friends in Hague who listened to our addresses were thinking of that! ウェントワースに向かうために私たちが電気自動車を待っていると、とある紳士が自動車で近づいてきて、彼も同じところに向かっているからホテルまで送ろうと申し出てくれた。快適な自動車に乗せてもらった。車から下りたところでミスター・ホンダに会う。彼は「国民」を代表して来ている。 小村男爵とミスター・高平を、それぞれの部屋に訪ねた。男爵は意気軒昂であった。私たちはヨーロッパでどこでも歓迎されたことを語った。ただハーグでだけは人々が表立って日本への共感を示さなかったといったところ、男爵はやや回りくどくであるが事情を説明した。当時バルチック艦隊がジャワ島に留まるのではないかという危惧があり、それを回避するために厳重な予防策が講じられたというのである。おそらくハーグで私たちの演説を聴いた友は、このことで頭を悩ませていたのだろう！

9月5日（火曜日） Afternoon papers say the new famous peace treaty was signed at 3 p.m. Today in the Navy Yard by Komura and Takahira on one side and Witte and Rosen on the other. It is rather strange that this peace is very unpopular both in Japan and Russia, while all other countries are satisfied. The reason no doubt is the peace was premature, that is to say, the Czar and his subjects do not realize that have been beaten and think, nay the Czar says so in many words in his proclamation to his army that they were in a position to inflict definite defeat on the enemy!! No wonder then that are dissatisfied with the astonishingly easy terms with they let off. And there seems to lie the seed of future troubles. They were not beaten enough to awake from their found dream of the Oriental aggressions. They may have burnt their figures severe enough to stop their mischief for a while, but as soon as they feel strong enough they will be sure to repeat the trick. But thank God, Port Arthur is no longer theirs. Nor is Korea under her influence. Possibly she will try next time to come out to the Persian Gulf or Constantinople. 午後の新聞で、件の新講和条約が本日午後3時に調印されたことが報じられる。場所は【ポーツマス】海軍工廠、全権委員は日本側が小村と高平、ロシア側がヴィッテとローゼンである。 この和平が日本でもロシアでも非常に不人気なのが奇妙である。それ以外の国は皆、満足している。理由はこの和平が時期尚早であるからに違いない。つまりツァーリ【皇帝】とその国民は負けに気づいておらず、それどころかツァーリが軍隊への声明で言葉を費やしたように、露軍はこれから敵に決定的な敗北をもたらそうという立場にあると思っていたのだ！それならば驚くほど易しい条件で見逃してやったのに不満足であっても不思議でない。ここに将来の軋轢の種がまかれたのが見えるのである。十分に打ち負かされていない彼らは、東洋侵略の夢から覚めてはいない。指に少しばかり火傷してしばらく悪戯を止めはしても、体力を回復すれば、すぐにでも似たような悪さを始めるであろう。しかしとにかくありがたいことに旅順は彼らのものではなくなった。韓国もその影響下から脱した。次回は【ロシアは】ペルシャ湾かコンスタンチノープルに打って出るかもしれぬ。

9月27日（水曜日） I went to the G. Central station to see Baron Komura off. He looked very pale and thin. But for sometime before the train left he stood at the rear platform of the train talking with friends. In the afternoon Drs. Hall, Knox and Imbrie and I were invited by Mr. D. Willis James to dine at his country house in Madison, N.Y. We three took 3.25 train from N.Y. and Dr. Imbrie joined us at Newark. Mr. James has a beautiful place, beautiful trees and lawns about his house. The house is like one of English mansions. He showed us his garden and hot houses. Then we talked about the general situation of Christian work in Japan. He takes deep interest, showing sympathy with the national movements. He asked once about the Endowment of Meiji Gakuin and I thought it was a very good time to speak of it. But Dr. Hall cautioned us not to speak of it tonight. So I could not do so. We had a nice dinner and returned by 8 o’clock train. Dr. Hall advises me to write Mr. James asking for an interview in his office and then I could get his help in the matter of endowment. グランドセントラル駅に小村男爵を見送る。大変顔色が悪く痩せていた。だが彼は列車が出る少し前に列車の最後尾のデッキに立ち、友人らと語ることはできた。 午後、ドクター・ホールとノックス、インブリーと私はミスター・D・ウィリス・ジェームズと晩餐をとるために、彼のニューヨーク州マディソンのカントリーハウスへ赴く。3人で3時25分の列車でニューヨークを発ち、ニューアークからはドクター・インブリーが加わった。ミスター・ジェームズの邸宅はすばらしい。美しい木々と芝生に囲まれている。英国の屋敷のような佇まいである。庭や温室に案内してもらう。その後、日本でのキリスト教活動の全般的な状況について話し合った。彼は非常に興味を持ってくれ、全国的な運動に共感を示してくれた。一度明治学院の寄付について質問されたため、これは説明の好機だと思った。しかしドクター・ホールに今夜はまだ時期でないと止められたため、話せずに終わる。晩餐をご馳走になり、8時の列車で帰った。 ドクター・ホールは私に、ミスター・ジェームズに手紙を書いて彼のオフィスでの面会を乞うことを勧める。そうして初めて寄付の件で助力を求められるという。

十二月二十八日（月） 小松緑氏来訪、午後ノ同氏結婚式ニ付ニ（衍）打合ヲ為ス。 午後四時三十分、帝国ホテルニ於テ小松緑、立石久子二氏ノ結婚式ヲ司ル。媒酌ハ工業学校長手嶋氏、立合人ハ小松氏ノ親父及ビ義兄、実妹、緑女ノ継母等ナリ。式後祝宴アリ、外務次官小村氏其他、外務官等四十余名ノ来賓アリキ。
