9月27日（水曜日） I went to the G. Central station to see Baron Komura off. He looked very pale and thin. But for sometime before the train left he stood at the rear platform of the train talking with friends. In the afternoon Drs. Hall, Knox and Imbrie and I were invited by Mr. D. Willis James to dine at his country house in Madison, N.Y. We three took 3.25 train from N.Y. and Dr. Imbrie joined us at Newark. Mr. James has a beautiful place, beautiful trees and lawns about his house. The house is like one of English mansions. He showed us his garden and hot houses. Then we talked about the general situation of Christian work in Japan. He takes deep interest, showing sympathy with the national movements. He asked once about the Endowment of Meiji Gakuin and I thought it was a very good time to speak of it. But Dr. Hall cautioned us not to speak of it tonight. So I could not do so. We had a nice dinner and returned by 8 o’clock train. Dr. Hall advises me to write Mr. James asking for an interview in his office and then I could get his help in the matter of endowment. グランドセントラル駅に小村男爵を見送る。大変顔色が悪く痩せていた。だが彼は列車が出る少し前に列車の最後尾のデッキに立ち、友人らと語ることはできた。 午後、ドクター・ホールとノックス、インブリーと私はミスター・D・ウィリス・ジェームズと晩餐をとるために、彼のニューヨーク州マディソンのカントリーハウスへ赴く。3人で3時25分の列車でニューヨークを発ち、ニューアークからはドクター・インブリーが加わった。ミスター・ジェームズの邸宅はすばらしい。美しい木々と芝生に囲まれている。英国の屋敷のような佇まいである。庭や温室に案内してもらう。その後、日本でのキリスト教活動の全般的な状況について話し合った。彼は非常に興味を持ってくれ、全国的な運動に共感を示してくれた。一度明治学院の寄付について質問されたため、これは説明の好機だと思った。しかしドクター・ホールに今夜はまだ時期でないと止められたため、話せずに終わる。晩餐をご馳走になり、8時の列車で帰った。 ドクター・ホールは私に、ミスター・ジェームズに手紙を書いて彼のオフィスでの面会を乞うことを勧める。そうして初めて寄付の件で助力を求められるという。

July 15th, Friday Staid in all day. In the evening called in company with Mr. and Mrs. Ohori, and Mr. and Mrs. Ichinomiya the chief of the Y.S.B. in the city. Mr. Ichinomiya is a wide awake young businessman somewhat younger than his wife. As I was going out found a letter in the box from Dr. Knox inviting me to come and stay with him a few days. 一日家で過ごす。夜、オオホリ夫妻、市内のY. S. B. のチーフであるイチノミヤ夫妻と出かける。ミスター・イチノミヤは抜け目のない若いビジネスマンで、夫人よりいくぶん年下のようだ。 出かける際、ノックス博士からの手紙が届いていることに気づく。彼の家で何日か過ごさないかという招待の手紙だった。

July 19th, Tuesday The Ohoris went to north field. I went to Dr. Knox’s on his invitation to spend a couple of days with him. He has an apartment in the new Union Seminary Building. He took me through the buildings. It is splendid; the lot and the building cost $2,500,000 he told me. Everything seems to be about as fine as it could be. The Presidents have it in the south western corner. The north wing has ten apartments for as many professors. Dr. Knox has two floors with three sides open. President Brown invited Dr. and Mrs. Knox, Bishop Honda and me to an informal dinner which was a very pleasant affair. I asked Dr. Brown and Dr. Knox to appoint a committee in Japan as did the Auburn for recommending worthy students for scholarship. July 20th, Wednesday In the afternoon Dr. Knox took me to the Coney Island on the new boat. It was a most delightful boat ride. The view of the city from the mount of the pier is magnificent. On this island there are many kinds of shows which we hardly care to see. On the way back Dr. Knox took me to his club, the Century, and we dined there, and came home after 11 o’clock. It was a very pleasant afternoon. 午後、ノックス博士が最新の船でコニー・アイランドに案内してくれた。今まで乗った中で最も快適な船だった。桟橋の頂上からの眺めは壮大だった。この島ではさまざまな種類のショーをやっているが、我々はまったく興味がない。帰路、ノックス博士が彼のクラブ、センチュリーに案内してくれ、そこで食事をし、11時過ぎに帰宅した。とても快適な午後だった。

July 29th, Friday In the evening called with Mr. and Mrs. Ohori on Dr. and Mrs. Knox, at the Union’s seminary. We went into the chapel and saw it lighted. It is a very fine chapel. Read Yamaji’s “History of Money Power in Japan”. It is a rather interesting reading. 夜、オオホリ夫妻とともにノックス博士夫妻をユニオン神学校に訪ねる。チャペルに入ると灯りがついていた。素晴らしいチャペルだ。山路愛山の「現代金権史」を読む。なかなか面白い本だ。

8月21日（月曜日） Quite warm again. Honda and I left Portsmouth by 10.55 train. Honda stopped at Boston of which he has not yet seen. I returned to New York and came to the Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Knox kindly arranged to give me his room in the seminary. 再びきわめて暑くなった。本多と共に10時55分の列車でポーツマスを発つ。本多はまだ行ったことのないボストンで途中下車した。私はニューヨークに戻り、ユニオン神学校に来た。ドクター・ノックスが学校で彼の部屋を使わせてくれるよう手配してくれていた。

8月23日（水曜日） I went to Dr. G.W. Knox’s house in Pelham Manor N.Y. He invited me to come and stay over the night. Pelham Manor is a very pretty place. We had a very interesting talk with over matters old and new. He promises to help me in raising an endowment fund for the Meiji Gakuin. He thinks if the institution can be put on a right basis, that is, if it can become a real Japanese institution as it was intended at first, the endowment can be raised without much difficulty. He promises to secure Dr. Hall’s help in the matter. The things look very hopeful. If the thing can be done, it will not only a greet financial help to the institution, but it will put a new soul into it. If God grant me, as I hope and pray, another ten years of life on earth, I will spend it for Meiji Gakuin. With all my short comings I think I can honestly say that I have tried to do my best. And it is nearly 13 years since I was made the President and nearly 25 years since I was called as an instructor in the theological school. But in order to do my best I need a reasonable confidence in the future development of the institution. If the school is to remain a mere “mission school,” as in the past, there is not much ground for the hope of vigorous growth in the future. As long as it is a foreign school, Japanese will not naturally look upon it as their own and thus the school will fail to win their hearty sympathy and support. The problem before me now is how to make Meiji Gakuin a real Japanese Christian institution as it was originally intended, as it clearly stated in the original plan of organization. The first need is an endowment fund large enough to secure its financial independence. And now is the time to start it. Now or never. I was glad to see Dr. Knox throughly in sympathy with my views on the subject. He wants to talk over the matter with Dr. Imbrie and myself. He invited us to dine with him at the Century Club on Monday after next. What will he say? What will the Board say on the question? That is to be seen. ニューヨーク州ペラムマナーにドクター・G・W・ノックスの自宅を訪ねる。彼に1晩泊まるようにと誘われていた。ペラムマナーは大変きれいな街である。昔話から最新の話題まで、楽しく語り合う。彼は明治学院のために寄付基金を募ることを約束してくれた。学校が正しい基盤を築けば、すなわち、元々の構想通り、真の日本の教育機関となれば、寄付はそれほどの困難もなく集められるだろうと彼は考えている。この件でドクター・ホールの協力を取りつけることを約束してくれた。前途に非常に希望が持てる。もし実現すれば、多大な財政上の助けとなるばかりでない、新たな魂が込められることだろう。もし神が私の願いをかなえて、あと10年の寿命を与えてくれたならば、私は明治学院のために尽力しよう。ここまでの私の短い活動でも、すべてにおいてベストを尽くしたと正直にいえる。私が総理になって13年近く、神学学校の教師として招かれてからはほぼ25年になる。 だがベストを尽くすにも、この学校の将来についてある程度の自信が必要だ。学校がこのまま「ミッション・スクール」の地位に留まるならば、将来において力強い成長はあまり望めなかろう。外国の学校のままであれば、日本人は自分たちの学校と考えず、ゆえに国民の心からの共感と支持は得られない。そこで私の直面する問題は、明治学院をいかに真の日本のキリスト教【教育】機関にするかということだ。それは最初の創立計画に明記されている。まず必要なのが、経済的自立が保証されるに十分な寄付基金である。今がそれを始める時である。今しかない。 ドクター・ノックスが完全に私の意見に共感してくれたことが実に嬉しい。彼はこの件をドクター・インブリーと私を交えて話したいという。私たちを再来週の月曜日にセンチュリー・クラブでの晩餐に招いてくれた。彼は何というだろうか。委員会はこの件に何というだろうか。それは今後わかるだろう。

9月4日（月曜日） This is the so-called “Labor Day” something like the “Bank Holy Day” in London. Unfortunately for the men it rained very hard the whole morning. The conference was still in session but I left Bronxville by 10.10 train for the city because I had an appointment to meet Drs. Knox and Imbrie at the Century Club, 7W. 43rd St. I was delayed a little by the big procession of the workmen in the 5th Ave. and when I got to the club they were already talking about on the topic of our coming together, namely the present situation of the missionary or rather Christian work in Japan in general and the future policy and endowment fund for Meiji Gakuin in particular. After a full talk I was glad to find that we were all agreed on the important point in regard to the future policy of the Dendo work and Meiji Gakuin, that is, in one word, the Japanese control of the work in order to make it a really Japanese one. And in regard to the latter, the solution of the problem was an endowment large enough to be free from an annual subsidy an appropriation from the mission boards. Dr. Knox is to see Dr. Hall to secure his support in the movement and Dr. Imbrie and myself to see Mr. Speer to secure the support of the Presbyterian board. 本日はいわゆる「レイバー・デー」、ロンドンの「バンク・ホリディ」にあたる休日である。労働者たちには気の毒なことに、午前中はずっと大雨であった。まだ大会は開催中だが、私はブロンクスビルを10時10分の列車で出て【ニューヨーク】市に向かう。ノックス、インブリー両ドクターに西43丁目7番のセンチュリー・クラブで会う予約があった。5番街で大規模な労働者の行進があったため、少し遅れた。私がクラブに着いたときには、2人はすでに話し合いを初めていた、テーマは私たちの協力事項について、すなわち日本における宣教というよりキリスト教活動の一般的な現状と、将来の方針、そして特に明治学院への寄付基金問題である。 よく話し合った結果、嬉しいことに重要な点については全員合意した。「伝道」活動の将来の方針、そして明治学院については一言でいえば真に日本の機関にするために日本人が運営するということ。後者の問題は、宣教委員会からの毎年の補助金なしでもやっていける程度の大きな寄付があれば解決する。ドクター・ノックスはドクター・ホールに会ってこの動きへの支持を取りつけることになり、ドクター・インブリーと私はミスター・スピアに会って長老派委員会の支援を求めることになった。

9月14日（木曜日） I went down to the Presbyterian Building to meet Dr. Imbrie who was to prepare a concise statement for raising the Meiji Gakuin Endowment fund. He wrote a very good statement. I made a few suggestions. Then we went over to the Reformed Church building and read the statement to Dr. Cobb and Amerman, both of whom heartily approved it and promised to present it to their Board at their next meeting for their approval. We came back to the Presbyterian Board’s room and were invited by Mr. Speer to a lunch and afterwards we went over the statement once more with Mr. Speer who made a few more suggestions. The statement is to be typewritten and then I am to send it to Drs. Hall and Knox for their suggestion. So far everything promises well. 長老派教会に行ってドクター・インブリーに会う。彼は明治学院の寄付基金を集めるための簡潔な声明を準備することになっていた。立派な声明が書き上がっていた。私は少しだが変更の示唆をした。それから共に改革派教会に行き、ドクター・コッブ、アメルマンに声明を読むと、2人とも衷心から同意し、委員会の次回会合でこれを読み、承認を求めることを約束してくれた。 私たちは長老派の委員会室へと戻り、ミスター・スピアから昼食に招かれ、その後もう一度、ミスター・スピアと声明を見直し、彼がまた少し訂正案を出した。この声明はまずタイプライターで清書し、それから私がドクター・ホールおよびノックスに送って、訂正箇所があるか確認するのである。今のところすべて順調に行きそうだ。

9月20日（水曜日） Received a very cordial letter from Dr. Cobb. He heartily approved our plan and is willing to sign the statement. He is going to arrange an interview with Mr. James at an early date. ドクター・コッブからとても温かい手紙を受けとる。彼は私たちの計画に心から賛成してくれ、声明にサインしてくれるとのこと。近々ミスター・ジェームズと会談を設定するそうである。

10月5日（木曜日） I took 8 o’clock special to New York and went directly to Mr. Speer’s room where I found Dr. Imbrie waiting for me. Then we together called on Mr. James who appointed 11 o’clock for our interview in his office, 99 John Street. He spoke about the ratification of the peace treaty which was the topic of the morning papers, saying that the terms were fair and very nice for Japan to make peace on these terms rather than to prolong the war in the uncertain expectation of getting a large indemnity which, to say the least, was not assured. Then I told him the object of our visit, namely, my desire to talk more fully about Meiji Gakuin, of whose endowment he was kind enough to ask me the other day at his home. I told him that we had a great opportunity before us but that that opportunity was very much limited by lack of funds for improvement and expansion of our college. I told him also that my earnest desire was to put the college on a permanent and independent basis but as long as we relied on annual aids from the two boards of foreign missions, it can never reach that position. Then I showed him the statement and Dr. Hall’s letter endorsing the plan. Dr. Imbrie was going to explain the history of Meiji Gakuin but without waiting to hear it he promised to give $10,000. He then advised me to see Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Jessup and Mr. John Sloanes, and get introduced to them by Dr. Hall. He was extremely cordial and told us to call any time at his office between 10 and 12 and 1 and 3, except Wednesday & Saturday. Dr. Imbrie tells me also that Mr. John R. Connerse consented to sign the statement and contribute to the funds. So far everything has been encouraging but nothing discouraging. I am exceedingly thankful. After taking lunch we went to Willets Press to order printing our statement which is to be done by Tuesday. 8時の臨時列車でニューヨークへ。直接ミスター・スピアの部屋に行くと、ドクター・インブリーも私を待っていた。それから共にミスター・ジェームズを訪ねる。ジョン・ストリート99番の彼のオフィスで11時に面会の予約を取りつけていた。彼は朝刊のトピックである講和条約の批准について話した。この条件で講和にいたったのは、結果がわからないのに賠償金を望んで戦争を引き延ばすよりも日本にとってずっと良い、賠償金は控えめに言っても保証されていないから、とのこと。それから私が今回の訪問の目的を伝えた。明治学院について、彼の自宅で提案していただいた寄付についてもっと話をしたいということである。私は、将来は非常に有望であるが、学校の改善や増設をする資金が限られているせいで、機会が狭められてしまったと話した。また、このカレッジを恒久的に独立させたいと心から願うこと、2つの海外宣教委員会からの毎年の援助に頼っているようでは、その地位は得られないだろうともいった。それから彼に、声明と計画を裏づけるドクター・ホールの手紙を提示した。ドクター・インブリーが明治学院の歴史を説明しようとすると、それを待たずにジェームズ氏は1万ドルを出しましょうと確約してくれた。それから私にアドバイスとして、ミスター・ケネディとミスター・ジェサップ、ミスター・ジョン・スローンズを訪ねること、それにはドクター・ホールの紹介を得るようにという。非常に親身になってくれ、水曜日と土曜日を除けば、10時から12時、1時から3時の間にいつでもオフィスに訪ねて来て良いといってくれた。 ドクター・インブリーからは、ミスター・ジョン・R・コナーズも声明に署名すること、基金への寄付を請け合ってくれたと告げられた。ここまではすべて有望、悲観的な点は何もない。感謝してもしきれない。 昼食をとってからウィレッツ・プレス社に行き、声明の印刷を注文、火曜日までに仕上げるよう手配する。

6月21日 Archibal［sic］ the University secretary of the Y.M.C.A. took through the new Gimnasium［sic］ and the Vanderbild［sic］ Hall which are both magnificent buildings. Took a morning train and stopped at Rye. Took a carriage and drove to the ［判読不能］ of the Presby. Church. Dr. Knox came out to meet me. And in the afternoon took me to his church and some of the places of interest. Rye is a rather pretty nice place. He has a nice church. Had a good talk over different things and people. 大学YMCA主事のアーチボルドが、新しい体育館やヴァンダービルト・ホールの中を案内してくれた。どちらも素晴らしい建物だった。 朝の列車に乗り、ライに立ち寄る。馬車に乗って長老派教会の［判読不能］に行った。ドクター・ノックスが出迎えてくれた。午後には、彼の教会やいくつかの興味深い場所に連れていってくれた。ライは結構良い場所だった。ドクター・ノックスも立派な教会を持っている。様々な物事や人について楽しく会話した。
