8月16日（水曜日） Kawai and Ishikawa called and we together went to the Japanese Consulate. The Consul Uchida received us kindly and handed us Mr. Chinda’s letter with its enclosure. Mr. Ishikawa kindly offered to go to the Bank and get exchanged our money. We went to a Chinese Restaurant and enjoyed a Chinese dinner. Then we went to the Y.M.C.A. building on W. 23rd St. Nobody whom we knew was there. We found out also Mr. Mott was not in town. I went then with Mr. Kawai to the Dutch Reformed Church House on East 22nd St. Dr. Amerman was not there but Dr. Cobb was. I found several letters waiting for me in the office. We went over to the Presbyterian Building. Saw Dr. Gavet and Miss Dickie, Mr. Speer’s secretary. I got some more letters. カワイとイシカワが来て、一緒に日本領事館へ行く。内田領事が迎え、また館内でミスター・珍田からの手紙を渡してくれた。ミスター・イシカワが銀行に行って私たちのために両替をしてきてくれるという。中華料理店に行き、料理を堪能した。その後西23丁目のYMCAに行くが、私たちの知人は誰もいなかった。ミスター・モットもまた街を留守にしていると知った。私はその後ミスター・カワイと東22丁目のオランダ改革派のチャーチハウスに行く。ドクター・アメルマンは不在だったが、ドクター・コッブがいた。事務所に私あての手紙が何通か待っていた。長老派の建物に行く。ドクター・ギャヴェットとミスター・スピアの秘書のミス・ディッキーにも会う。さらに何通か手紙を受け取った。

8月28日（月曜日） By appointment I went down town to meet Dr. Imbrie at his nephew’s office at No.18 Jersey St. We sat down in the St. Paul’s Churchyard for nearly two hours talking over different matters. Then we went to in the Park Row building to get our lunch. After that he took me to the office of his old friend Mr. W. E. Stiger who is a member of the Board of Foreign Missions. After seeing the Aquarium which is a good one we called at the Reformed church building and saw Drs. Cobb and Amerman. Dr. Amerman changed considerably in his appearance. He looks very much older; his beard is nearly white. No wonder he has aged. Mrs. Amerman has been insane for some years. She does not know her own daughters and son. She only vauely knows her husband. I felt very sorry for him. He is living alone in Blooms field. He says he is very lonely. …… Mr. J. Ballagh called at the club. 約束した上でドクター・インブリーに会いに行く、場所はジャージー・ストリート18番にある甥御さんのオフィスである。セント・ポール教会の中庭に座して2時間近くもさまざまなことを話し合った。その後はパーク・ロウのビルに行って昼食をとる。食後、彼の旧友で海外宣教委員会のメンバーであるミスター・W・E・スタイガーのオフィスを共に訪ねる。立派な水族館も見物、それから改革派教会でコッブおよびアメルマンの両ドクターに会った。ドクター・アメルマンは外見がずいぶん変化していた。かなり歳をとられたように見え、顎鬚などほぼ真っ白だ。歳をとってはない。ミセス・アメルマンはもう何年も脳を患っている。実の娘たちや息子もわからないそうだ。夫だけはぼんやりと認識するようである。大変気の毒に感じた。彼はブルームス・フィールドに一人住まいしている。非常に寂しいと語っておられた。……ミスター・J・バラがクラブに訪ねて来た。

9月1日（金曜日） Went to the annual conference of the International Committee and Y.M.C.A. Secretaries which met at Hotel Grammatam【sic】 in Bronxville, N.Y. about 15 miles from the city. About 100 men were present, some of whom are old friends or acquaintances, like Wishard, Morse, Murray, Ober brothers and Dr. Warner. 国際委員会とYMCA主事の年次大会に行く。会場はニューヨーク州ブロンクスビルの「ホテル・グラマタン」、【ニューヨーク】市から15分ほど行った場所だ。出席したのは100名ほど、ウィシャードやモース、マレー、オーバー兄弟、ドクター・ワーナーなど、旧知の人々もいた。

9月3日（日曜日） Took an early lunch and came to New York to speak to the Japanese young men of New York in the church house belonging to the University Presbyterian Church where Kawai is working. There were present about 40 of them in spite of the bad weather. Kawai had charge of the meeting and I spoke for nearly 40 minutes on Japan’s mission in the Orient. They listened very well. After the closing prayer a sort of after meeting was held in another room for a free conversation and Mr. Ishikawa and two others spoke on the subject of the peace Treaty. None of them is satisfied with its terms. They somehow seem to have a grudge against Kaneko. I hastened to Bonxville【sic】, because I was to spoke in the evening session of the Conference. Wishard, Mott and several secretaries spoke each for 10 minutes. Then the chairman Mr. Murray called on me to speak and I did so. I expressed my pleasure in attending the Conference and thanked the International Committee for what they have done and are doing for Japanese Y.M.C.A. work. I told about Mr. R.S. Miller’s initiative part in the army work in Manchuria and concluded with a hearty invitation to the Student Federation Conference in Tokyo in 1907. They received my address with great cordiality and great many came and thanked me for it. 早めに昼食をとり、ニューヨークに来た。日本人青年に向けて講話するためである。場所は大学長老教会に属する教会堂で、そこでカワイが働いている。悪天候にもかかわらず40人ほどが集まった。カワイが会合を進行させ、私は40分ほど日本の東洋での伝道活動について語った。熱心に聴いてくれた。閉会の祈りの後で、自由な会話のための事後ミーティングが別室で行われ、ミスター・イシカワ他2名が講和条約について話した。誰も条件に満足していなかった。金子を恨んでいるようだ。 私はブロンクスビルに急いだ。大会の晩の部で話すことになっていたのだ。ウィシャードとモット、その他数人の主事がそれぞれ10分間話す。その後議長のミスター・マレーに呼ばれ、私がスピーチした。大会に参加できて光栄であることを述べ、国際委員会が日本のYMCAにしてくれたこと、また今後もしてくれるであろうことに対して謝意を表した。ミスター・R・S・ミラーが満州の陸軍で主導的な働きをしたことも語り、1907年に東京で行われる学生同盟大会への心からの招待で結んだ。皆、大変友好的に傾聴し、多くの人が前に来て感謝してくれた。

9月14日（木曜日） I went down to the Presbyterian Building to meet Dr. Imbrie who was to prepare a concise statement for raising the Meiji Gakuin Endowment fund. He wrote a very good statement. I made a few suggestions. Then we went over to the Reformed Church building and read the statement to Dr. Cobb and Amerman, both of whom heartily approved it and promised to present it to their Board at their next meeting for their approval. We came back to the Presbyterian Board’s room and were invited by Mr. Speer to a lunch and afterwards we went over the statement once more with Mr. Speer who made a few more suggestions. The statement is to be typewritten and then I am to send it to Drs. Hall and Knox for their suggestion. So far everything promises well. 長老派教会に行ってドクター・インブリーに会う。彼は明治学院の寄付基金を集めるための簡潔な声明を準備することになっていた。立派な声明が書き上がっていた。私は少しだが変更の示唆をした。それから共に改革派教会に行き、ドクター・コッブ、アメルマンに声明を読むと、2人とも衷心から同意し、委員会の次回会合でこれを読み、承認を求めることを約束してくれた。 私たちは長老派の委員会室へと戻り、ミスター・スピアから昼食に招かれ、その後もう一度、ミスター・スピアと声明を見直し、彼がまた少し訂正案を出した。この声明はまずタイプライターで清書し、それから私がドクター・ホールおよびノックスに送って、訂正箇所があるか確認するのである。今のところすべて順調に行きそうだ。

二月十四日（月） 出院授業如常。 アメルマン氏ヘ交渉委員会ノ情況ヲ報シ、且バラ氏トノ贈答ヲ封送ス。 風邪気ニテ心地悪シ。

五月二十四日（火） 出院授業如常。 ドクトルアメルマンヨリ吊状達ス。

八月二十九日（月） とよこ第十三回誕辰ニ付、豆飯ヲ焚キテ祝ス。 ドクトルタムソン氏ヨリ、四谷角筈衛生園理事会書記トシテ、せき子ノ長逝ニ付吊詞ヲ送ラル。 又同時ニ米国ドクトルアメルマン氏夫婦ヨリ書状達ス。

6月16日 Called at the office International Committee. Mr. Mott is not in the city. Met Mr. McBarry. Then called at the Reformed Church House 25 East 22nd st. found Drs. Amerman and Cobb. Dr. A. invited me to come over to his house tonight. Met Mr. ［Beoch?］ who took me to an［sic］ restaurant. Dropt［sic］ in the Y.M.C.A. Reading Room and read papers. Came over with Dr. Am. To his house in Bloomfield and met Mrs. A. and the children. 国際委員会のオフィスを訪問する。ミスター・モットは市内にいなかった。ミスター・マクバリーに会った。その後、東22丁目25番地にあるリフォームド・チャーチハウスを訪れたところ、ドクター・アメルマンとドクター・コッブに会えた。ドクター・Aは今夜彼の家に来るよう招いてくれた。ミスター・ビオチにも初めて会う。レストランに連れて行ってくれた。YMCAの読書室に寄って新聞をいくつか読んだ。ドクター・Amと共にブルームフィールドにある彼の家に行き、ミセス・Aと子どもたちに会った。

6月17日 Came to N.Y. with Dr. A. Called on Mr. R. C. Morse, 139 East 18th st. He invited me to be his guest till I go to Northfield. After lunch called at the Presby. House and met Drs. Ellingwood, Gillespee and Brown. Saw there the Corean Prince 義和宮 Came back again with Dr. A. and his daughter, Mrs. Satfen. Went to a prayer meeting with them. ドクター・Aと共にニューヨークに行く。東18丁目139番地のミスター・R・C・モースを訪れた。私がノースフィールドに行くまでの間、彼のゲストとして過ごすよう招いてくれた。昼食後はプレスビテリアン・ハウスを訪れ、ドクター・エリングウッド、ドクター・ギレスピー、そしてドクター・ブラウンの3名と初めて会った。朝鮮の王子である義和宮をそこで見かけた。ドクター・Aと彼の娘のミセス・スタフェンと共に再び［彼の家に］戻る。彼らと共に祈祷会にも参加した。

6月30日 Mr. R. Wilder of India spoke on the dependence on God. Very good and effectual. Mr. Moody spoke on accepting the Bible in all its parts. Mr. Murry invited Mr. Din and myself to dine at the Northfield Hotel. Had an informal conference with them and Mr. Wishard about the college work in Japan. Saw the model of the Solomon’s Temple in the library. Dr. Maccaughan of ［Toronto?］ spoke of Christ healing the palsied man of Capernaum. He is a very powerful speaker. インドのミスター・R・ワイルダーが神への依存についてスピーチをした。非常に良い、印象的な内容だった。 ミスター・ムーディは聖書のすべての内容を受け入れることについて語った。 ミスター・マレーがミスター・ディンと私をノースフィールド・ホテルでの食事に誘ってくれた。彼らとミスター・ウィシャードと共に、日本の大学の取り組みについての私的な話し合いもした。 図書館でソロモンの神殿の模型を見た。 トロントのドクター・マコーンはキリストがカペナウムの男の麻痺を治したことについて語った。非常に力強い語り手だ。 ［日付なし］ The Round Top meeting was very interesting. ［a］ North American Indian, ［a］ negro, Mexican, deligates［sic］ from Venezuwella［sic］ Chile spoke. They were all very good. ラウンド・トップでの会議が非常に興味深かった。北アメリカ先住民一人、黒人一人、メキシコ人、そしてベネズエラとチリの代表者たちがスピーチをした。皆とても良かった。

7月1日 Had a talk with Wishard again on the college work in Japan. He seems a little more favorably inclined. We the Japanese Had a prayer meeting by ourselves. Mr. Mott and other general secretaries spoke on the college asso. work in this country. A collection or rather subscription was taken. It amounted to more than $2,000. All foreign delegates and the officers had their picture taken on Round Top. And then we all went to Mount Hormon where Wishard and Wilden told us the origin of the first summer conference there and then we went up to the site where a new Chapel is be built and more than twenty persons prayed in their own languages. ［欄外］ On Round Top, delegates from South Africa, Australia and Great Britain spoke. Strange to say they did not excite much interest. 再びウィシャードと日本の大学の取り組みについて話した。以前よりさらに少しだけ好意的に捉えているようだ。 私を含めた日本勢だけで祈祷会を行う。 総主事のミスター・モットや他の総主事たちは、この国の大学組織の取り組みについて話した。 献金、というよりもむしろ寄付金が募られ、合計2000ドル以上に達した。 海外の代表者たちや職員たち全員で、ラウンド・トップで写真を撮ってもらった。その後皆でマウント・ハーモンへ行き、そこで最初の夏季会議が開催された発端についてウィシャードとウィルデンが教えてくれた。さらに新しい礼拝堂が建てられる予定の場所まで移動し、20人以上の人々がそれぞれ自国の言葉で祈りを捧げた。 ［欄外］ ラウンド・トップで、南アフリカ、オーストラリア、そしてイギリスがスピーチをした。不思議なことに、あまり興味が起きなかった。
