5月3日（水曜日）～7日（日曜日） On May 3rd the Wednesday we took a morning train from Gare de【sic】 Nord for Zeist, Holland, where we arrived about 6 o’clock. Our lodging was a “Kinder pension”. Honda, Fisher, Davis ［Son of Dr. Jerome D. Davis of Doshisha］ and I had the same room. We had breakfast at the pension but dinner and supper at a small hotel. The Conference began on Wednesday evening in the Moravian church. The delegates from nearly 30 nationalities were more than 100. The simplicity of the church building is very striking. So different from a Roman Catholic church. The sessions were 9-12. 30 and 4-6 in the afternoon. The languages were German and English, one less than the Paris Conference and so much less tedious. At first there was very little enthusiasm. I was not the only one who felt it. But the interest increased as the conference proceeded until it culminated in the Sunday afternoon and evening meetings. Honda read a paper on the Bible study. I spoke Sunday afternoon on “the New Orient and its claims on the Students of the West.” I also spoke at the women’s section of the conference which was organized for the first time this year. There were about 30 delegates. My topic was the woman students and their spiritual needs in Japan. The evenings were devoted to the committee meetings. Principal business of the meetings were the re-affirmation of the Evangelical basis of the Federation, election of the officers and deciding the time of the next conference in Japan to be April. On Sunday evening Mr. Mott gave a powerful address on “The Price of Leadership.” Before he spoke, however, he made an appeal for subscription for the expense for the next Conference. And in a few minutes £684 were subscribed. One evening was given to a discussion in the meaning of “Conversion.” German and Dutch movements had suspicion in regard to the American idea of Conversion. They thought Americans had very very superficial views about it. Each delegate from different movements read a brief statement on the sense of conversion as understood by them. ［Note. Honda seems to have read his paper “My Conversion”. For reference See Okada’s “Honda Yōichi Den,” p.209］ The result was a most striking unity of its essential meaning. Everybody was satisfied ……and we separated on Sunday night with thanksgiving and sorrow in our hearts. Zeist is a beautiful spot highly characteristic of Holland. The houses and streets are very clean and the avenues of trees are beautiful. The place is full of villas of rich men. 5月3日、水曜日には北駅から朝の列車でオランダのザイストに向かい、午後6時に着いた。「キンダー・ペンション」という宿に泊まる。本多とフィッシャー、デイヴィス〔注：京都同志社大学教授ドクター・ジェローム・D・デイヴィスの子息〕が同室である。朝食はペンションでとったが、昼と夜は小さなホテルで食べた。 大会は水曜日夕方、モラヴィア派教会にて始まる。30カ国近くから集まった代表団は総勢100名以上であった。 この教会の建物が簡素なことは驚くほどだった。ローマ・カトリック教会の対極である。集会は9時から12時半と、午後の4時から6時までである。言語はドイツ語と英語でパリ大会より1つ少ないため、退屈さはかなり薄れた。最初はあまり興が乗らないようであった。これは私だけが感じたのではない。しかし会が進むにつれて熱が高まり、日曜日の午後から夕刻に最高潮に達した。本多が聖書研究についての論説を読み上げた。私は日曜日の午後に「新たな東洋と、西洋の学生YMCAに対する責務」というテーマで話をした。また、今年初めて設けられた女性部会でもスピーチした。代表者は30人ほどだった。私の話題は日本における女子学生と、彼女らの精神的必要であった。 夕方からは各委員会の会議に費やされた。これら会議の結果で重要な点は、連盟の「福音主義の原則」を再確認したこと、役員の選出、次回の大会を日本で、4月に行うと決めたことである。 日曜日にはミスター・モットが「指導者の代償」という力強い演説を行った。話に入る前に、次の大会のための寄付を求めた。数分間で応募金は684英ポンドに達した。ある夜には「回心」の意味について議論がなされた。ドイツとオランダは、アメリカ的な回心の解釈に疑問を持っていた。アメリカ人の見方は表面的に過ぎると考えたのだ。それぞれの国の代表者が、改宗の自分たちの解釈を手短に説明した。〔注：本多は「私の回心」という小論を読んだようだ。岡田による『本多庸一伝』209ページ参照〕この結果、根本的意味において、目覚ましい一致をみた。全員が満足した。……日曜日の夜に感謝と別れの悲しみを胸に解散した。 ザイストはオランダらしさがよく表れた、美しい土地である。家も通りも非常に清潔で、街路樹が見事だ。富裕な人々の別荘が多くあった。

一月二十六日（土） Went to the Imperial Hotel. In company with Mott, Honda & Fisher called on Mr. Makino the Minister of Education who received us cordially. Mott spoke about the proposed Hospices and asked his cooperation in getting the Japanese moneyed men to contribute toward the fund. He was very courteous and simply said he will consider the matter and let us know. Then we drove to Count Okuma’s. He was very cordial and showed a lively interest in the enterprise and promised to give letters of Introduction to different welthy men. In the afternoon Mr. Mott met the Central Committee and others and told them about the delegates and programme of the Conference. He spoke in the Hall in the evening. 帝国ホテルに行く。モット、ホンダ、フィッシャーの3人で牧野文部大臣を訪ね、快く迎えていただいた。モットは提案されているホスピスについて話し、日本の富豪に資金を提供させるために協力を求めた。牧野大臣は非常に礼儀正しく、「検討してお知らせします」とだけ言った。それから私たちは大隈伯爵のところへ行った。彼はとても親切で、この事業に大きな関心を示し、さまざまな富豪に紹介状を渡すことを約束した。 午後、モット氏は中央委員会とその他の人々に会い、代表団と会議のプログラムについて話した。夕方、モット氏はホールで講演した。

一月二十七日（日） Preached in the Shiba Church, baptized four young men. At 3 p. m. went to the hotel again to consult with Mr. Mott. Honda, Fisher, Niwa, Komatsu, Otsuka, Kashiwai were present. We considered the different speakers and subjects & c. until he had to start for the station. We went to the Shimbashi Station to see him off. Mr. Morce went with him. Fisher and other foreign secretaries went with him as far as Shizuoka to talk over different matters with him in the train. June 15th, Wednesday After devotional session for a quarter of an hour the Conference began with the consideration of Reports of Commission I “Carrying the Gospel to all the new-Christian world.” Mr. Mott as the Chairman of the commission made a very powerful speech. He was followed by a number of men who represented different counties. Mr. Chiba and Dr. Davis spoke for Japan. 12.35-1 p.m. Intercession meeting which was very impressive. 2.30-4.30 The consideration of Report of Commission I was continued. A lady made a very good 7 minute speech on the Extension of Christianity Empire sizing the social side of it. Mr. Speer too made a very good one emphasizing the individual side of it. As a member of the Business Committee I was asked to sit on the platform. In the evening the Hon. Seth Low presided. Prof. Paterson of the Edinburgh University on Christianity as the final and universal region as Redemption and Dr. Coffin on the same subject in its Ethical Ideal. The latter is by fair a better speaker. His speech was a very strong impeachment of modern civilization falling short of the Christian Ethical Ideal. 15分間の祈りの会の後に大会が始まり、まずは第一委員会の報告書、「非キリスト教世界のすべてに福音を伝えること」について検討した。 委員会の議長であるミスター・モットが非常に力強い演説をした。その後、様々な国の代表者たちが続いた。ミスター・千葉とドクター・デイヴィスも日本の代表として演説した。午後12時35分から午後1時は他者のために神に祈る執り成しの祈りが行われ、非常に印象的だった。2時半から4時半は引き続き第一委員会の報告書についての検討が行われた。とある女性が、キリスト教帝国の拡大について、その社会的側面における影響の大きさを測る7分間の素晴らしい演説を行った。ミスター・スピアも、その様々な側面について強調した非常に良い演説を行った。 私は運営委員会の一員として壇上に座るよう頼まれた。 夜にはセス・ロウ閣下が進行を務めた。エディンバラ大学のパターソン教授が贖罪としての究極かつ普遍的な宗教という観点からキリスト教を語り、ドクター・コフィンも同じ主題を倫理的な理想という観点から語った。後者の方が圧倒的に話し上手だった。彼の演説はキリスト教の倫理的な理想に遠く及ばない現代文明を強く非難するものだった。

June 22nd, Wednesday The discussion was on the preparation of missionaries. The subject was warmly but with good spirit discussed. Was invited by the famous publisher, the Clark family to dinner. Met Dr. Hasting, Prof. Mott, and some other noted men. Honda and Harada also were invited. In the evening Dr. Horton spoke on “the Sufficiency of God,” did not hear the first part of it and was not very much impressed by it. 議題は宣教師の養成についてで、熱く前向きな話し合いが行われた。 有名な出版社であるクラーク一家から夕食に招待された。ドクター・ヘイスティングやモット教授などの著名人に会った。本多と原田も招待されていた。 夜にはドクター・ホートンが「神の十全性」について演説した。最初の方は聞いていないが、あまり感銘を受けなかった。
