三月十四日（土）　晴 文部次官牧野伸顕氏ヲ訪ヒ、卒業証書授与式演説ヲ依頼ス。遂ニ承諾ヲ得ズ。 細川義昌ヲ訪ヒ、高知教会伝道者ノ件ニ付面晤ス。 李春生氏ヲ東京ホテルニ訪フ。 おちよ、おとよ、加治木氏方ニ往キ種痘ヲナス。おちよ、おとよ、おはる、病院ヘ見舞ニ往テ帰ル。おせき愈々軽快ノ報ヲモタラス。 御両親様、保科伯父様、一ノ瀬、鈴木伯母様方ト共ニ芝海水浴ニ往キ一泊シ玉フ。

5月29日（月曜日） We heard of the great naval fight in the Strait of Korea and a Japanese victory, but no details. Honda is better but is advised by the doctor to stay in the room. Mr. Webster took me to Prof. Strautz who had invited us to a breakfast at his home. We found a Turkish Commissioner there who sat with us at the home. In the course of conversation he asked how could Turky be a strong civilized nation and yet remaining oriental. I said to him one secret of Japan’s success was her adoption of the representative form of Government. He said, also, there was the difficulty! In Turky he could never express his real opinions without danger. I said without popular freedom, no country can be strong and great …… Then we called on Prof. Vanbery to whom Minister Makino had Kindly introduced us by telegram. He is old, 75 years old, he told us, but an energetic man. He said Mohamedan World is hopelessly lost. He had been a tutor of the Sultan. He denounced Russia and Germany, and the Kaiser too. He wished specially to be remembered to Mr. Tokutomi, as Prof. Strautz wished to be remembered to Mr. Asahina. After a hasty lunch we went to the station and took 2.10 train for Vienna, where we reach at 7 o’clock. We came to the same Pension Pohl…… 朝鮮海峡で大海戦が行われ、日本が勝ったと聞いたが、細かいことはわからない。 本多は良くなっているが、ドクターからは外出の許しが出ない。ミスター・ウェブスターの案内でプロフェッサー・シュトラウツの家を訪ねる。朝食に招かれていたのである。そこにトルコの弁務官もいて、同席した。話の中で彼は、トルコが東洋らしさを保ちながら強大な文明国になるにはどうしたら良かろうかと尋ねた。私は日本の成功の秘訣の1つとして、代議政治を採用したことだと答えた。すると、それは難事だという。トルコでは本心を明かすことは常に危険が伴うのだと。私は、国民の自由失くして強く偉大な国になることはできないと告げた。…… その後プロフェッサー・ヴァーンベーリを訪問する。牧野公使が電報で紹介の労をとってくれたのである。教授は75歳と老年だが精力的な人物だ。イスラム教世界はまったく道に迷っていると嘆く。彼はトルコ高官の家庭教師を務めた人である。そしてロシアとドイツ、さらにドイツ皇帝をも糾弾した。特にミスター・徳富によろしく伝えてくれということだ。またプロフェッサー・シュトラウツも、ミスター・アサヒナによろしくとのこと。 急ぎ昼食をとってから駅に向かい、ウィーン行き2時10分の列車に乗り、午後7時に到着。宿は同じペンション・ポールである。……

5月30日（火曜日） Since yesterday it become quite warm. We called at the Legation and met Mr. and Mrs. Makino. He showed us the official telegrams of the naval battle. The scene was near the Okinoshima and the battle continued from Saturday afternoon until Monday and it was a most decisive victory for Japan. 12 Russian ships sunk and 4 more captured. Damages to Japanese ship only insignificant. A wonderful triumph! Minister Makino invited us to dinner tomorrow noon. He also arranged for a conference with some friends tomorrow afternoon. While we were talking with Mr. Nishi, the secretary of the Legation, Rev. Prof. Heckler called, and we found that he was going to interpret for us this and tomorrow nights. …… We went to the Y.M.C.A. building and talked to them, professor Heckler interpreting for us. He had been with the German Emperor in Palestine of which he is quite proud. He is very kind hearted old gentleman. 昨日から暑いほどの陽気である。公使館を訪ねて牧野夫妻に会う。海戦の公式電報を見せていただいた。場所は沖ノ島近くの海域、土曜日の午後から月曜日まで続き、圧倒的な日本の勝利に終わった。ロシア船は12隻が沈没、4隻が拿捕された。日本側の損害はごくわずかだった由。すばらしい大勝利だ！ ミスター・牧野から明日の晩餐に招待される。また、明日午後には彼の友人たちとの会談を設けてくれた。 書記官のミスター・ニシと話しているときに牧師であるプロフェッサー・ヘックラーがやって来て、彼が明日夜の私たちの通訳であると知った。……YMCAを訪ね、話をする。通訳はヘックラー教授。彼はドイツ皇帝がパレスチナを訪ねる時に同行したことを大いに誇りとしている。心優しい老紳士だ。

5月31日（水曜日） Went at noon to the Legation to dine. There were present at the table besides ourselves, Mr. and Mrs. Makino, their daughter and young secretaries of the Legation. After dinner we had a long good talk with the Minister and he took us in his carriage to a Dr. Münz’s where we met a number of well known men and ladies, all friends of Mr. Makino. Prof. Heckler and we went to in the Minister’s carriage to the Reformed church where we spoke to an audience of 300, or 400 people. Their pastor gave us a very cordial welcome. It was a better meeting than we expected here in the Roman Catholic city. 正午に午餐のため公使館へ行く。私の他にテーブルについたのは牧野夫妻、その令嬢、それに公使館の若手書記官らである。午餐後に時間をとって公使と語り合い、その後公使と共に馬車でドクター・ミュンツに行き、有名な紳士淑女に会った。皆、ミスター・牧野の友人である。 私たちはプロフェッサー・ヘックラーと共に公使の手配で改革派教会へ行き、300人か400人ほどの聴衆を前にスピーチをした。教会の牧師が大変暖かく歓迎してくれた。このローマ・カトリック優勢の都市で、期待した以上の集まりであった。

一月二十六日（土） Went to the Imperial Hotel. In company with Mott, Honda & Fisher called on Mr. Makino the Minister of Education who received us cordially. Mott spoke about the proposed Hospices and asked his cooperation in getting the Japanese moneyed men to contribute toward the fund. He was very courteous and simply said he will consider the matter and let us know. Then we drove to Count Okuma’s. He was very cordial and showed a lively interest in the enterprise and promised to give letters of Introduction to different welthy men. In the afternoon Mr. Mott met the Central Committee and others and told them about the delegates and programme of the Conference. He spoke in the Hall in the evening. 帝国ホテルに行く。モット、ホンダ、フィッシャーの3人で牧野文部大臣を訪ね、快く迎えていただいた。モットは提案されているホスピスについて話し、日本の富豪に資金を提供させるために協力を求めた。牧野大臣は非常に礼儀正しく、「検討してお知らせします」とだけ言った。それから私たちは大隈伯爵のところへ行った。彼はとても親切で、この事業に大きな関心を示し、さまざまな富豪に紹介状を渡すことを約束した。 午後、モット氏は中央委員会とその他の人々に会い、代表団と会議のプログラムについて話した。夕方、モット氏はホールで講演した。

十二月十九日（土）　晴 午前、揮毫。 後藤子爵邸ニ於テモツト氏ノ為ニ再ビ晩餐会アリ。来賓ハモツト氏ノ外、牧野内大臣、岡田文相、埴原大使、阪谷男、平塚府知事、中村市長、團、大倉、浅野等ノ実業家連。外国人ハフエルプス、ウイ［ル］バル、スネードナリ。長尾、斎藤及ビ余ハ信者側ノ客ナリ。 後藤子ノ挨拶ニ対シ、モツト氏ノ卓上演説アリ。川尻氏之ヲ通訳シタリ。趣意ハ世界ノ大勢ヨリ説起シ、Y M C Aノ事業及ビ精神ニ及ビタリ。卓上スピーチトシテハ少シク長キニ失シタリ。通訳モ三四回要点ヲ誤訳シタリ。甚タ気ノ毒ニ感ジタリ。
