I was very nervous when I began but soon got over it and safely got through it. But this was the first experience in my life to conduct an English service. After the service people kept up speaking very kind things about it, largely complimentary, no doubt! Mr. Alexander was quite enthusiastic over it. In the afternoon I tried to take a nap in my room but I could not sleep. I was too excited I suppose. And after lying down for a while I stole out and took a walk, and I saw some beautiful lawns and trees. It was very quiet and restful. In the evening I found an envelope written on it “With thanks of the Seabright chapel” lying on the desk. It contained ten $5 gold pieces.\nCol, McCook, son in law of Mrs. Alexander who lives next door invited me to dinner. There were Mrs. McCook and their three daughters, Mr. Reed and a young lady. After dinner Col. McCook told me how he introduced or rather piloted Marquis Ito when he was here last and also how he introduced Kaneko to Pres. Roosevelt. He is very proud of their friendship. He promised to introduce me also to the President.\n日曜日の夜が明けた。良い天気である。［シー・ブライトの］教会は150人が入れると思うが、シーズンもほぼ終わりだというのに満員だった。話し始めは非常に緊張したが、すぐに調子を戻し、最後まで続けることができた。だがこれは私が英語で礼拝を取りしきった初めての経験である。礼拝の後も次々と大変親切な言葉をかけられる。ほとんどがお世辞であろうとは思うが。ミスター・アレキサンダーは大いに喜んでいた。午後には自室で昼寝しようとしたが、どうも眠れない。興奮しすぎたのだろう。しばらく横になってから、起きて散歩した。きれいな芝生や木々を見る。実に静寂で安らかであった。夕刻、私は机上に封筒を見つけた。「シー・ブライト教会から感謝をこめて」と書かれている。中に5ドルの金貨が入っていた。\nミセス・アレキサンダーの義理の息子であるマクック大佐が隣に住んでおり、晩餐に招いてくれた。ミセス・マクックと3人の令嬢、ミスター・リード、その他に若い女性が1人加わった。晩餐後にマクック大佐が私に、伊藤侯爵が前回ここに来たときに彼を紹介した、というより案内役をつとめたといい、また金子をルーズベルト大統領に引き合わせたとも語った。彼はこうした友情を大変誇りにしている。私のことも大統領に紹介すると約束してくれた。"@ja ;
