五月二十五日（日） Got up at 6.30 and had a warm bath. After breakfast got ready and waited for Mr. Howard Heinz to call. He came a little after nine with his aunt and took me to the East Liberty Presbyterian Church. I saw and spoke a few words at the Sunday School. After the Church services he took me to his own home in the hill. It is a beautiful place, had nice lunch, then he and his wife took me to the Carnegie Institute, then called on Mr. Guthrie who is just been appointed ambassador to Japan. Then we went over Mr. H. J. Heinz home. Saw Meis Heinz, had dinner. He took me to the First Presby. Church where I happened to see old Mr. Davis. 6時半に起床、朝風呂に入った。 朝食後に準備を整えてミスター・ハワード・ハインツの訪問を待つ。彼は9時少し過ぎに彼の叔母と共にやって来て、私をイースト・リバティー長老派教会に案内してくれた。日曜学校に出て短いスピーチをした。教会での礼拝が終わると、丘の上の彼の自宅へ行く。すばらしいところだ。美味しい昼食をいただいた。その後彼と夫人と共にカーネギー研究所へ行き、さらに先ごろ駐日大使に任命されたミスター・ガスリーを訪ねる。その後Ｈ・Ｊ・ハインツ氏宅へ。 メイズ・ハインツ会って晩餐となった。彼に連れられて第一長老教会に行ったところ、懐かしいことにミスター・デイヴィスに遭遇した。

六月三十日（月） The R.R. porter showed us a compartment which we could have to ourselves. We gave him 2 francs for it. I tried to lay down and sleep but did not sleep or could not. The day dawned at 3.30. The country［is］pretty and the air cool. Aemisegger left to Basel. I arrived at Zueich at 8.35 and took a room at Hotel St. Gothard. After taking lunch went to Cook's office and Hotel Gloekenhof to see Mr. Frank Brown. I found that Mr. Heinz went to Rheinphelden［sic］to receive medical treatment because he was very much run down. And Mr. ［Brown］advised me to call him. 列車のポーターが車室に案内してくれ、そこをわたしたちだけで独占できた。お礼に2フランを渡した。寝ようと横になったが結局眠らなかった、というより眠れなかった。朝3時30分には夜が明けてきた。美しい国であり、空気はひんやりしている。エミゼッガーはバーゼルへと発った。私はチューリッヒに8時35分に到着、ザンクト・ゴットハルト・ホテルに部屋を取った。昼食をすませてからクックの店、そしてグロッケンホフ・ホ テルにミスター・フランク・ブラウンを訪ねる。ミスター・ハインツがラインフェルデンに行ったと知った。大変疲れて体調が悪く、治療を受けるためだそうだ。ミスター・ブラウンに、見舞いに行くよう勧められる。

七月一日（火） I took 9.45 train to Rheinphelden［sic］and got there 11.30 and walked down to the Hotel de Salines. I found Mr. Heinz as cordial as ever. He at once invited me to dine with him and his sec. He talked over different matters and took walk with me and took supper with me in time for me to take 7. P.M. train. He also invited me to stay with him at the hotel until the convention. I told him that I did not need more money for my travelling expenses. He said he appreciated it very much because he had spent a good deal of money already. 9時45分にラインフェルデン行き列車に乗り、11時30分に着いて、サリーヌホテルへ向かう。ミスター・ハインツはいつものように暖かく迎えてくれる。すぐに彼とその秘書と共に午餐しようと誘われる。彼と様々な話をし、共に散歩をし、夜7時の列車に間に合うよう夕食を共にした。また、会議までこのホテルに泊まればどうか と誘ってくれた。私はこれ以上旅費をかけられないと話した。彼はもうすでにかなりの出費をしていたため納得し、感謝もしてくれた。

七月四日（金） I took 9.35 A.M. train for Rheinfelden where I was invited to come by Mr. Heinz. It is an old town on the Rhein and the Hotel Salines Where he is stopping with his son is a first［-］class hotel and a kind of sanatorium. I am glad to be here where it is so quiet. They gave me a very fine room. In the afternoon we took a walk through the town and then he & I took a carriage ride to the other side of the river which is German soil. He asks me questions about his addresses which he has to make at the convention. His son is a very different type of man from his father. 朝9時35分の列車で、ミスター・ハインツに招かれていたラインフェルデンへ。ライン川沿いの古い街で、彼が息子と泊まっているホテル・サリーヌは一流のホテルでもあり、一種のサナトリウムでもある。大変静かな場所で、来てよかったと思う。立派な部屋を提供された。午後には街の中を散策し、その後彼と私の2人で川の向こうへ馬車でわたると、そこはもうドイツ領である。 彼が大会ですることになっている演説について、いくつか質問された。息子は彼とは全く違うタイプである。

七月六日（日） I rewrote my address and showed［it］to Mr. Heinz and he liked it much better. In the afternoon Mr. Heinz took me in an automobile to Augst to see the great Electonic［sic］Dinamo by the water power. It is a wonderful work costing 13.000.000 Francs. Wrote a letter to Dr. Dunborn［?］ Worked on my address till late at night and got ready for leaving tomorrow. 書き直した原稿をミスター・ハインツに見せると、格段に良くなったと言ってもらえた。午後に彼に連れられて自動車でアウグストに行き、水力発電所を見学した。すばらしい設備であり、建設に1300万［スイス］フランかかったとのこと。ドクター・ダンボーン［?］に手紙を書く。 夜は遅くまで演説原稿を書き、明日早くに発つ準備もした。

七月七日（月） Left with Mr. Heinz and his son the hotel at Rheinphelden［sic］a little before 11 A.M. and came to the Hotel Golckenhof at 1 P.M. In the afternoon Mr. Kozaki called and compared our notes since we left home. Together［,］we went to the office of the Convention and paid the fee, received the badge［,］and found some mail from home. All is well at home. 午前11時少し前、ミスター・ハインツとご子息と共にラインフェルデンのホテルを出て、午後1時にホテル・ グロッケンホフに到着。 午後、ミスター・小崎が訪ねてきて、出国してからの双方の覚書の突き合わせをした。一緒に大会の事務室に出向き、費用を払い、バッジをもらい、何通か手紙を受け取る。家は皆つつがなくやっているとのこと。

七月十日（木） The morning at the Tonhalle. Report on India. ￡1600 for India presented from Scotland. Roll call of Nations began with Russia, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Bulgaria. In the afternoon went to the Executive Committee. Reports and findings of six commissions took long time. As I had to speak in the evening I left before this, finally acted on our invitation. But Kozaki stayed and saw the committee agree unanimously to accept it. In the evening the Dinner Party had the whole thing to itself. The convention on the proposal of Mr. Heinz supported by Sir Francis Belsey unanimously voted in favor after hearing this invitation need［ed］by myself. 午前中はトーンハレ。インドについての報告。インドにスコットランドから1600ポンドの寄付提示があった。参加各国が点呼を受けて一言述べる「ロールコール」。ロシアから始まり、スウェーデン、スペイン、ドイツ、ブルガリアと続いた。 午後には執行委員会に行く。6つの委員会がそれぞれ報告し結論を述べるので、時間がかかった。私は晩にスピーチをしなければならないので、その前に退席し、最終的には招致に応じた。しかし小崎が残って、委員会が満場一致でこれを受け入れたのを見届けた。晩餐会があり、夜はそれに費やされる。 大会は、フランシス・ベルゼー卿の支持を受けたミスター・ハインツの提案に基づき、私自身がこの招致の必要性を訴えた後、満場一致で賛成票を投じた。

七月十二日（土） In the morning a memorial service for Mrs. Hartshorn. Dr. Zwemer gave a splendid address in Moslem world pointing out that it was ripe unto Harvest. Subscriptions were then taken up amounting to $1200,000. The Budget is 400,000 dollars more. New officers were nominated and elected. They put me on the Executive Committee. Mr. Heinz paid for Kozaki life membership. In the afternoon there was a concert. The missionaries from Japan, Formosa and Korea and Kozaki & myself had a Banquet at the Tonhalle restaurant 20 people in all. 午前中にミセス・ハーツホーンのための追悼礼拝が行われる。ドクター・ツエマーがイスラム教の世界について優れた演説を行い、機は熟したと指摘する。寄付金は120万ドルに達した。予算にはまだ40万ドル足りない［?］。新たな役員が推薦され、選出された。私は執行委員に任命された。ミスター・ハインツが小崎の生涯会員の会費を支払った。午後にはコンサートがあった。日本と台湾、韓国からの宣教師と小崎と私でトーンハレのレストランで晩餐会、総勢20人だった。

七月十三日（日） In the morning went to the Tonhalle. After the service there was［a］children's service. The Hall was full. In the afternoon was invited to the farewell meeting of the Tour party by Mr. Heinz and spoke a few words. Mr. Kinear invited Kozaki & myself to dinner. In the evening attended the Executive. A long discussion about the budget for the next three years. Came back 11.30. 午前中はトーンハレへ。礼拝の後で子供たちの礼拝があった。ホールは満員であった。 午後にはミスター・ハインツが視察団の送別会を開き、スピーチをした。ミスター・キニアが小崎と私を夕食に呼んでくれる。晩は執行［委員会］に出る。今後3年間の予算について、長い議論がなされた。11時30分に戻る。

七月十四日（月） Rain ceased and it is very hot. Stayed in the room all morning writing my address on Sunday School and Religious Education in Japan tomorrow afternoon. In the afternoon attended the Executive Committee meeting. Long discussion again on the budget and on the division of fields between Great Britain and America. The budget is too large. Sir Robert Laidlaw invited us and Mr. Heinz and the two general secretaries to dinner and we talked about the next convention in Tokyo. Dr. Merger appealed for subscriptions for extending the Sunday School work. 雨が止み、ひどく暑くなった。 午前中は部屋で、明日の午後にする予定の日本の日曜学校と宗教教育についての演説原稿を書いていた。 午後から執行委員会のミーティングへ。再び予算と、英国とアメリカの分野の分担についての長い討議。予算が巨額すぎる。サー・ロバート・レイドローが私らとミスター・ハインツと2人の総主事を晩餐に招き、東京での次回大会について話し合った。ドクター・ミーガーが、日曜学校の活動を拡大するための寄付を募った。

七月十五日（火） The last day of the convention. In the morning went to the Tonhalle. Kozaki spoke a few words of thanks for accepting our invitation. In the afternoon went to the Executive Committee meeting and also spoke at the smaller hall on the Sunday School and the Religious Education in Japan. In the evening the Hall was crowded and I was called upon to speak about our invitation without any further notice. I was told to keep within ten minutes. Therefore I began with referring to Kozaki's speech in the morning and proceeded to give the reason why the conventions should be held in Tokyo, and closed with renewing our invitation. But Mr. Heinz was quite disappointed because I did not speak more fully about the commission. 大会最終日である。午前はトーンハレに出る。日本での開催を承認してくれたことに小崎が簡潔に感謝の言葉を述べた。午後には執行委員会のミーティング、また小ホールの方で日本における日曜学校と宗教教育についてスピーチした。 晩には大ホールは混みあっており、私は日本への招致について話すよう言われたが、その後は特に指示もない。10分以内に収めるように言われる。そこで私は朝の小崎のスピーチに触れ、大会を東京で開くべき理由について述べ、招待の言葉をくり返して締めくくった。 しかしミスター・ハインツはかなり失望していた、私が委員会について詳しく触れなかったためだ。

七月十六日（水） Early in the morning I called on Mr. F. Brown and explained the situation. He thought I was quite right but kindly offered to see Mr. Heinz about the matter. He did so and told me to see him myself. So I went to his room and found him in much better humor. I apologized to him for my oversight in not speaking more fully about the commission and he very cordially accepted and took out［a］500 franc bill and presented it to me to meet the expenses of my stay in Europe. So it ended all right. Went to the Museum and the University and called on Mr. Heinz again to say good bye to him. 朝早めにミスター・Ｆ・ブラウンを訪ねて事情を説明した。彼は私の言い分を正当と思ってくれたが、親切にミスター・ハインツに取り次いでくれ、私に直接会うようにうながす。そこで部屋に行ってみると、彼の機嫌はかなり良くなっていた。私が委員会についてもっと詳しく述べなかったのは過失であったと詫びると、彼は快く受け入れてくれ、ヨーロッパ滞在費の足しにするよう、500［スイス］フラン札を出してくれた。ということで丸く収まった。美術館と大学を訪ね、またミスター・ハインツのところに寄っていとまごいをした。
