3月9日（木曜日） ［In the evening （Wednesday, March 8） only a few persons at the table — only one besides me at our table. The ship reached the mouth of the Yantsze or Woosung about midnight, and stopped］. We got up rather early in the morning and after breakfast soon got on board the “Tender”. We started about half past 8 and came to the “jetty” half past ten. After calling the Yokohama Specie Bank we and three more Japanese went to the Nagoya Hotel kept by Morita, a graduate of Dōshi-sha. After a Japanese tiffin that was rather poor. Honda and I went to the Y.M.C.A. Building and met Mr. Lewis and some Chinese leaders. Mr. Kurokawa then gave us a drive to the two Chinese gardens and also took us to the old Chinese city, where we did not care to stay very long. We came back to the Nippon Yuzen Kaisha, a new building and walked over to the Japanese Consulate, where we met Mr. Matsuoka ［Yōsuke 洋右］ and Mr. Kimura the Marine Engineer connected with the Consulate. There we heard the first news of the victory of the battle of Mukden. The Russians retreating and the Japanese Army vigorously pursuing. These friends took ［us］ to a Japanese hotel Hōyō Kwan and treated us to a Japanese dinner which was very good. Finishing our dinner rather hasting we went back to the Y.M.C.A. building in the Peking Road. They had opening exercises for their English night school. After a Chinese teacher spoke in his own tongue, I made brief remarks in English. I remarked about the close relations of China and Japan, the aim and probable results of the war. They applauded me and seemed to appreciate my points. There were about fifty or sixty young men. Honda went to Mr. Kurokawa’s, and I to Mr. Lewis. Mr. Lewis lives in a new house nicely situated in the suburbs. 〔昨晩（3月8日、水曜日）は私たちの食卓には人が少なかった―私の他には1人だけだった。船は夜中に長江か呉淞江の河口に着き、停泊した。〕 私たちは早めに起床し、朝食後すぐに「連絡船」に乗り込む。8時半頃に出て、10時半に【上海港】の「桟橋」に着いた。横浜正金銀行を訪ねた後、他に3人の日本人も加わって、同志社卒のミスター・モリタが経営する名古屋ホテルへ行く。日本食の昼飯を食べたが、あまり旨くない。その後本多と私はYMCAに行ってミスター・ルイスや、中国人指導者たちに会う。ミスター・黒川が馬車で中国式庭園を2カ所、案内してくれる。旧市街にも行ったが、長居はせず。新しい建物の日本郵船会社に戻り、領事館でミスター・松岡〔洋右〕とミスター・木村に会う。後者は領事館関係者の造船技師である。そこで奉天会戦勝利の第一報に接した。ロシアは退却しており、日本軍が猛追しているという。この2人が〔私たちを〕ホテル豊陽館にて日本食でもてなしてくれた。たいへん美味しかった。 夕食は早々に済ませ、再び北京路のYMCAに戻る。英語の夜学クラスで最初の演習をしていた。中国人教師が自国語で何か話した後に、私が英語で短いスピーチをした。清国と日本の親密な関係について述べ、日露戦争の目的と、予想される結果を語った。拍手が起き、話の趣旨に賛同してくれたのが感じられた。聴衆は50人か60人ほどの青年たちである。 本多はミスター・黒川の家、私はミスター・ルイスの家に行く。ミスター・ルイスは郊外の良い場所にある新しい家に住んでいる。

3月10日（金曜日） Shanghai has grown very much larger since I visited it six years ago. ［Note: Dr. Ibuka first went to Shanghai on a Y.M.C.A. business in May, 1889］. Many large new buildings have been put up. The city is busier than ever. The price of lots, Mr. Lewis tells me, has gone up 300 percent in 7 years. In the morning Mr. Lewis drove me to St. John’s College and the Nanyang College （南洋公学（ママ））. The former is a fine institution, a group of nice large buildings very well kept too. Dr. Pott is the president. About 300 students, 50 of whom are in the college department. The latter is a government institution newly established but not yet open. We are told that is to be turned into a commercial college. It was a chilly morning but I enjoyed the ride very much. The morning papers give further details of the great battle of Mukden. The victory seems almost complete. The Russians seem to have been surrendered on both sides, and the railroad was destroyed almost 7 miles north of Mukden. They were obliged to retreat to the northeast. Mukden was occupied by noon yesterday. The loss of the enemy was reported to be more than 100,000! Banzai for the Japanese army! I hope Kropatkin is crushed. I am anxious for further details. Mr. Kimura ［木村斉雄］ invited us to dine with his family. His wife is a Scotch woman. They have a little baby. Mr. Kimura then took us in a carriage to the 同文書院 quite a distance of the city. We went through the buildings which are not well kept. There are 240 students …… It began to rain and we drove back to the bund, returned to the “Tender”. Mr. Kurokawa （黒川新次郎） brought a basket of fruit. We got back to the steamer about 7 o’clock. Strange to say, I felt like coming back home, though greatly enjoyed going on shore and meeting so many friends, both new and old. They are all very kind indeed. A number of Russian officers are going home by this steamer, 200 of them were in the steerage, they say. 上海は6年前に来たときと比べて非常に大きく発展している。〔注：井深博士は1889年5月にYMCAの用件で初めて上海を訪れている。〕大規模な建築がいくつも建設された。にぎやかさはこの上ない。ミスター・ルイスによると、地価は7年間で300％も上昇したそうだ。 翌朝、ミスター・ルイスが聖ヨハネ大学と南洋公学まで馬車で行ってくれた。前者は立派な施設で数棟の大きなビルからなり、手入れも行き届いている。学長はドクター・ポットである。学生数は300人ほど、そのうち50人が大学課程に在籍。後者の南洋公学は新たに創設された国立大学だが、まだ開校していない。ここは将来、商業大学になる予定だと説明された。肌寒い朝であったが、馬車は快適だった。 朝刊で奉天の大会戦の詳細を知ることができた。日本軍の圧勝であったようだ。露軍は両翼で降伏した模様で、鉄道は奉天の北、7マイル近くも破壊された。敵は北東への撤退を余儀なくされた。奉天は昨日正午に占領された。敵軍の損害は10万人以上であったという。日本軍万歳！クロポトキンを打ち破れ。さらなる詳細が知りたいものだ。 ミスター・木村〔木村斉雄〕の自宅に呼ばれ、晩餐に与かる。奥方はスコットランド人である。可愛い赤子がいる。その後ミスター・木村が私たちを馬車で、ずいぶん遠くの「同文書院」まで連れて行ってくれた。ややくたびれた建物の中に入る。生徒数は240人である。……雨が降り始め、海岸通りへ帰り、「連絡船」に戻った。……ミスター・黒川（新次郎）が果物籠を持参した。皆で7時くらいに汽船に着く。不思議に家に帰ったような心持がした。とはいえ陸に上がってこれほど多くの新旧交えた友人に会えたことは楽しかった。皆さんたいへん親切だった。ロシア人将校らがこの船で帰国するそうだ。兵士200人も三等客室に乗ったという。

二月二十四日（金） 出院授業如常。 上海ルイス氏ヨリ、清国学生青年会総会ヘ出席ノ招待状来ル。

二月二十七日（月） 出院授業如常。 神戸ヘリングヲ郵送ス。 在上海ルイス氏ノ「日本教育」ノ原稿ニ批評ト簡単ノ序文ヲ添ヘテ還附ス。 和蘭国女皇陛下即位式祝賀表ニ署名ノ同意ヲ表シテ、一書ヲ在ロンドンドクトルマシウスニ送ル。但大会議長トシテナリ。

五月十五日（月） 雨天、気候東京ニ同ジ。寧ロ冷気ノ方ナリ。 京都匯文書院ノ教習陳維城氏ニ面会ス。 午後五時ヨリ「ユニオンチヤーチ」ニ於テ祈祷会アリ。 ルイス氏ト共ニ出席。ドクトルエドキンス、パーカル、セツクヒールド、ブライアン、ヒツチ等ニ紹介セラル。 支那教育会前会議ノ記事ヲ一読ス。 東京及ビ神戸ヘ書翰ヲ発ス。

五月十六日（火） 雨休ム、演説ノ原稿ヲルイス氏ニ示ス。 在天津ノ書記ライオン氏ニ面会ス。 ルイス氏夫婦ハ今夕余ノ為ニ特別ニリセプシヨンヲ為シ、上海ノ居留日本人ヲ招待ス。招ニ応シテ来ル者、日本領事館員、郵船会社、三井物産会社員等四五十名。又支那人二十名許。余、基督教青年会ノコトニ付一場ノ話ヲ為シ、上海ニ於テモ又基督教青年会ノ設立セラレ［ン］コトヲ希望スルヲ述ブ。 音楽アリ、茶菓アリ、一同大満足ヲ表シテ去ル。 ルイス氏ノ厚情、真ニ謝スベキナリ。

五月二十一日（日） At 10:30 a.m. twenty-one young Japanese men came here and Mr. Lewis and I talked to them about the nature and aims of Y.M.C.A. They expressed their desire to have one for themselves and appointed a committee of six to canvass the community to see how many men will join and how much money could be raised too. We aim to meet them again after our trip to Nanking. In the evening went to the London Missionary Society Church. Dr. Muirhead preached. There were about forty Christians and twenty non-Christians. They all belong to lower classes. 午前10時半に日本人の青年21名が来て、ミスター・ルイスと私でYMCAの本質や目的を説明した。彼らは自分たちにも同じような組織が欲しいと希望し、どれくらいの参加者が集まるか、そしてどれくらいの資金を調達できるかを調査するために、6名の委員を任命した。南京への旅から帰ってきたら、再び会いたいと考えている。 夕方にはロンドン伝道協会の教会へ行った。ドクター・ミュアヘッドが説教を行い、約40人のクリスチャンと20人のノン・クリスチャンが参加していた。皆、下層階級の人々だった。

五月二十三日（火） In the morning went with Mr. Lewis to steam ship companies to have my ticket transferred from the French mail to the Pacific mail. Went also to Yokohama Specie Bank. In the afternoon called on Mr. Nishimaki, the manager of the Y.S. bank and had a very good talk with him about organizing J.Y.M.C.A. in Shanghai. He takes a real interest in the matter and promises to help it along the best he can. Had a long talk with Mr. Lewis about the proposition of Mr. Miller to have Mr. Lewis transferred to Japan from China. A little after nine I went board［sic］ the Yuen Wo. Lewis and Lyon came to the boat. 午前中は、フランスの郵便船からパシフィック・メイル社の便へと船のチケットを変更してもらうために、ミスター・ルイスと一緒に蒸気船会社へ赴いた。横浜正金銀行にも行った。午後には横浜正金銀行の支店長であるミスター・ニシマキを訪ね、上海に日本YMCAを組織する件について色々と話すことができた。心から関心を持ってくれ、可能な限り支援することを約束してくれた。 ミスター・ルイスに日本から中国に転勤してもらうというミスター・ミラーの提案について、ミスター・ルイス本人とじっくり話し合った。9時を少し過ぎた頃にYuen Woに乗船。ルイスとリヨンも同乗。

五月二十九日（月） The boat began to move about 4 o’clock in the morning and reached the wharf a little after 9 o’clock. Mr. Lewis took me in a cab to the Chinese Bund and the arsenal. And in afternoon Mrs. Lewis drove to the Women’s Union Missionary Society girls’ school. Japanese young men invited me to a Japanese dinner in the Tokiwa Tei and talked about the constitution of the proposed Jap. Y.M.C.A. in Shanghai. There are only a few Christians so that it makes it very difficult to make it a distinctly Christian association. Received an invitation to dine at his home with Mr. Komura［sic］ and perhaps Mr. Nagai. 船は午前4時頃に出発し、9時を少し過ぎた頃に埠頭に着いた。ミスター・ルイスが馬車で外灘や軍事工場［江南機器製造総局か？］まで連れて行ってくれた。午後には、婦人一致海外伝道協会の女学校にも連れて行ってくれた。日本人の青年たちがトキワ亭での和食夕食会に招待してくれ、どのようにして上海に日本YMCAを組織するかについて話し合った。キリスト教徒の数は少ないので、キリスト教色の強い組織にするのは非常に難しいかもれない。ミスター・ニシマキの家での、ミスター・コムロと、もしかしたらミスター・ナガイも参加する食事会への誘いを受けた。

五月三十日（火） Spent the morning with Mr. Lewis in going over the proposed constitution for Jap. Y.M.C.A. In the afternoon I called on Messrs. Hanaoka, Ikeda, to see whether the Christians were willing to take the leading part with movement or not but as a result of my inquiring I found out that there were only two Christians among them. That was enough to satisfy me that they were not ready to form a time Y.M.C.A. I called on Mr. Tatsuno of Muroi and Brother Co. The young men made me a present of Chinese ［personal］ inksticks. In the evening went to Mr. Nishimaki’s to dine with him and Mr. Komura［sic］. Mr Nagai could not come. I had a good talk with them about association work. They are really interested in movement and promised to aid it. 午前中はミスター・ルイスと一緒に日本YMCAの規約草案を確認して過ごした。午後には、YMCAに関する活動をリードしていく気持ちがクリスチャンの人々にあるかを確かめるため、ハナオカ、イケダの両氏を訪ねた。だが、その結果、彼らの知っているキリスト教徒は彼ら2名しかいないということが分かった。それを知って、正式なYMCAを組織するにはまだ早いということに十分納得できた。ムロイ・アンド・ブラザー・カンパニーのミスター・タツノも訪ねた。この若者は名入りの中国製の墨をプレゼントしてくれた。 夜はミスター・ニシマキの所へ行って、彼とミスター・コムロと一緒に夕飯を食べた。ミスター・ナガイは来られなかった。［YMCAの］組織に関する活動についてじっくりと話せた。彼らはこの活動に大変興味を持ち、協力すると約束してくれた。

五月三十一日（水） Left the English ［Bund］ a little after noon. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis came to see me off. So did 辰野, 花岡, 池田and田巻. The tender Victoria took me to Rio de Janeiro about 2 o’clock and the ship left Wu Song by 2:30. There are ［a］ good many passengers on board. Cloudy but calm. 正午を少し過ぎた頃に外灘を出発。ミスター&ミセス・ルイスが見送りに来てくれた。辰野、花岡、池田、田巻も。連絡船ヴィクトリアに乗って午後2時頃に［旅客船］リオデジャネイロに到着し、乗り移り、午後2時半には呉淞を出発した。乗船客はかなり多かった。曇っていたが、穏やかな天気だった。

7月4日 Dr. Mabie a Baptist minister spoke of “the Days of the Son of Man” as days of Divine manifestation or revelation. In the afternoon we Japanese met by ourselves. Fisher was present. Mr. Curtis came in afterward. At noon the Cornell Univ. students invited me to dinner. On Round Top Lewis who is going to China, Williamson from England, and Wilder from India appealed for volunteer for mission field. In the evening Mr. Moody gave a strong address in his personal experience. How he was called into the work of ministry. His experience as a Sunday school teacher in Chicago. So the World’s Student Conference for the year is over with great blessing on all preasent［sic］. The great conference that ever met in Northfield. ［欄外］ 600 delegates 36 denominations 60 Foreign dele. 25 States 136 Univ. or colleges $3,000 subscribed. バプティスト派の牧師のドクター・マービーが、「人の子イエスの日々」は神が顕現したり託宣がもたらされたりした日々であるというスピーチをした。 午後は、日本人だけで集まった。フィッシャーもそこにいた。ミスター・カーチスも後からやってきた。 昼に、コーネル大学の学生たちが夕飯に誘ってくれた。 ラウンド・トップでは、中国に行く予定のルイス、イギリスのウィリアムソン、そしてインドのワイルダーが、宣教の対象地におけるボランティアの呼びかけを行っていた。 夕方には、ミスター・ムーディが自身の実体験についての力強い演説をした。 牧師という職を天職と受け止めた経緯や、シカゴで日曜学校の教師をしていた時の経験について語っていた。 こうして、参加者全員への大いなる祝福とともに、今年の世界学生大会は閉幕した。これまでノースフィールドで開催された中で最も大きな会議だった。 ［欄外］ 代表者　600　　　宗派　36 外国の代表者　60　州　25 大学またはその他の学校　136　　国や人種　27 寄付金　3,000ドル
