六月七日（日） 午前七時、自宅出発、新橋停車場ニ向フ。協同伝道ノ為ナリ。八時三十分、特別急行車ニテ出発ス。途中ニテ千葉勇五郎氏ノ同車中ニアルヲ発見ス。京都ヨリハ原田助氏モ同乗シタリ。車ノ中八十七度以上ノ熱ニテ、大暑ノ如キ心地シタリ。大坂ヨリ藤本寿作ト云フ青年伝道者モ同乗シタリ。

一月十八日（水） 午前、授業如例。 午後、青年会館ニテキリスト教［教］育必要取調委員会ヲ開キ、大学設立ノ必要ニ付各自意見ヲ述ブ。シユネードル、ヘーデン、ギウリツク、イムブリー、ワイコツフ、バンダイク、ベリー、ベンニンクホフ、本多庸一、江原、石坂、千葉及ビ余出席ス。 評議ノ末、起草委員六名ヲ挙グ。イムブリー、シユネーダー、ヘーデン、ギウリツク、石坂及余ノ六人ナリ。委員ハイムブリー氏ヲ起草者ト定ム。同志社ハ別ニ大学ヲ設ルノ方針ナリト云フ。

七月二十四日（月） 今朝ノ講演会ノ司会ハ故ニ自ラ避ケ、小松幹事ヲシテ当ラシム。ソノ故ハ左近氏講演ハ自ラ不賛成ナルノ意ヲ表センガ為ナリ。但前夜ニ比シテソノ調子稍改善シタリ。是レフヒシヤー氏ノ忠告ニ（ノ）アリタルニ由ル。聴衆ノ過半ハ睡眠ノ中ニ之ヲ聞流シタリ。 午後、同盟委員会ヲ開ク。原田、本多、鵜﨑氏等モ来ル。開拓者ノ方針ニ付議論アリ。笹尾氏最モ痛論ス。岡田氏ノ弁解アリ。遂ニ編輯委員三名ヲ挙ルコトニ決ス。 夜、原田氏ノ講演アリ。題ハ東北（西）宗教ノ接近及ビソノ将来ナリ。聴衆、惰気ナキ能ハサリキ。

June 12th, Sunday In the morning went to Hampstead to Dr. Horton’s Church. He expounded the latter half of the 2nd Corinthians. I was quite disappointed in his preaching. There was nothing original. But he told a rather good story about the boyhood of Robert Moffat. In the afternoon went to the Japanese Y. M. C. A. at Sheperd’s Bush and spoke to about twenty Japanese young men. Honda was there and he led the meeting. Tamura & Chiba were there too. I took my nori and kakimochi. We had a simple Japanese supper. They all enjoyed the nori very much. We took a walk in the Hyde Park. 午前中はハムステッドにあるドクター・ホートンの教会に行った。彼はコリントの信徒への手紙二の後半について詳しく解説した。その説教内容にかなり落胆した。独創性が全くなかった。ただ、ロバート・モファットの少年時代についての話は結構良かった。 午後はシェパーズ・ブッシュにある日本YMCAの事務所へ行って、20人くらいの日本人の青年たちに向けて語った。本多がいて、会議を仕切っていた。田村と千葉もいた。私は海苔とかき餅を持参した。簡単な日本料理で夕食会をした。皆喜んで海苔を食べていた。 皆でハイド・パークを散歩した。

June 16th, Thursday After the devotional Exercises Dr. Campbell Gibson presented the Report on Commission II. On the Church in the Mission Field Dr. Arthur Brown made a very strong speech, insisting that the whole attitude of the Western Church toward the church in the mission field should now be changed. Mr. Pieters spoke but made no impression. Dr. Brown carried the Conference with him. Dr. Murray also spoke on the right side but did not amount to much. Honda spoke in Japanese and Fisher interpreted for him. In the afternoon the discussion on the same subject was continued. Harada spoke on Belief and its statement. It was rather indefinite. In the evening I did not go to the Conference. I took rest and wrote letters to home and Dr. Imbrie. 祈りの会の後、ドクター・キャンベル・ギブソンが第二委員会の報告書を発表した。ドクター・アーサー・ブラウンが宣教地の教会形成について力強い演説を行い、宣教地の教会に対する西方教会の全体的な姿勢を今すぐ変えるべきだと主張した。ミスター・ピーターズも演説したが、印象に残らなかった。ドクター・ブラウンは参加者たちの心を掴んでいた。ドクター・マレーの演説も方向性は良かったが、内容は平凡だった。本多は日本語で演説し、フィッシャーはそれを通訳していた。 午後も同じ主題についての議論が続いた。原田は信仰や信条について演説した。やや曖昧な内容だった。 夜は大会に参加せず身体を休め、家族やドクター・インブリーに宛てて手紙を書いた。

June 22nd, Wednesday The discussion was on the preparation of missionaries. The subject was warmly but with good spirit discussed. Was invited by the famous publisher, the Clark family to dinner. Met Dr. Hasting, Prof. Mott, and some other noted men. Honda and Harada also were invited. In the evening Dr. Horton spoke on “the Sufficiency of God,” did not hear the first part of it and was not very much impressed by it. 議題は宣教師の養成についてで、熱く前向きな話し合いが行われた。 有名な出版社であるクラーク一家から夕食に招待された。ドクター・ヘイスティングやモット教授などの著名人に会った。本多と原田も招待されていた。 夜にはドクター・ホートンが「神の十全性」について演説した。最初の方は聞いていないが、あまり感銘を受けなかった。

June 25th, Saturday After breakfast took a walk with Honda. He bought a grip and I bought half a dozen collars and handkerchiefs. Left the Hotel at 9.30 and took a train at 10 o’clock and came the Greenock about 11. We met Mr. Chiba at the station. A launch brought us to the Steamer California which is a little over 1.000 tonage but a nice comfortable boat. Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown and several others who attended the Conference are on board the Steamer. Wrote some letters to be mailed in Ireland tonight. Thus far the sea is very calm and the day fine. 朝食後、本多と共に散歩した。彼は旅行かばんを、私は［交換用の］襟とハンカチを半ダース購入した。 9時半にホテルを出て、10時の列車に乗り、11時頃にグリーノックに到着した。駅ではミスター千葉に会った。私たちは連絡用の小船で蒸気船カリフォルニアまで移動した。総トン数1000トンを少し上回る程度の大きさだが、快適で良い船だ。ドクター・アーサー・ブラウンとそのご夫人など、大会に参加していた人たち数名がこの船に乗っている。 今夜アイルランドから発送される予定の手紙を何通か書いた。これまでのところ海はとても静かで天気も良い。

July 3rd, Sunday I was asked to speak at the divine service, and I did so. Dr. Arthur Brown presided, Honda read the scripture and I spoke about the result of Christian mission during the past fifty years in Japan. Dr. B. asked for a copy of my address, so did some others. The steamer arrived at the Pier about 3 p. m. I saw Dr. Amerman waiting at the Pier. Mr. Ohori did not appear. So I concluded that my letter did not reach him in time or he was prevented by some business. But while I was waiting for my baggage or rather while I was having my baggage examined by the Custom’s officers he came. Mrs. Ohori too came and helped me and took me to their home. The Custom’s officers were not very strict. I had nothing to pay. But before we came to the Pier the Emigrant officers asked to see our passport and asked how much money I had with me. The is a new thing. I hardly expected that sort of thing though I had no trouble about it. Honda went to stay with Mr. Mizuno, the Consul General, and Chiba went to Philadelphia. On the whole it was a pleasant voyage. Thankful we arrived America in safety. 礼拝でスピーチをするように頼まれたので、応じた。ドクター・アーサー・ブラウンが司式し、本多が聖書を読み、私は日本における過去50年間の福音宣教活動の成果について話した。ドクター・Bやその他何名かが、私のスピーチの写しが欲しいと言ってくれた。 蒸気船は午後3時頃に埠頭に到着した。ドクター・アメルマンが埠頭で待っているのが見えた。ミスター・オオホリは現れなかった。そのため、手紙が間に合わなかったか、何か他の用事で来られなくなったのだろうと推断した。しかし、自分の荷物を待っている間、というより税関職員が荷物を検査している間に彼がやってきた。ミセス・オオホリも一緒に来て世話を焼いてくれ、自宅に招待してくれた。税関の職員達はあまり厳しくなく、何も支払わなくて済んだ。しかし、埠頭に着く前に出入国管理職員にパスポートを見せるよう言われ、所持金額も確認された。こんなことは初めてで、ほぼ想定外の出来事だったが、特に問題なく対応できた。ホンダは総領事のミスター・ミズノのところに滞在しに行き、千葉はフィラデルフィアへと向かった。 概して快適な船旅だった。無事アメリカに到着できて良かった。

July 5th, Tuesday Wrote to Miss Punington, Miss Telford, and Mrs. Wadsworth. Wrote and sent a copy of my address to Dr. A. J. Brown. Went with Mr. O to John Wanamaker’s Department store and bought some under wear. Called at the Presbyterian Boards room and had a good talk with Dr. Fulton about the need of a united Christian university in Japan. He expressed himself strongly in favor of the idea and suggested an informal conference between the representatives of the Prs. & Reformed Boards, the methodist and Baptist Boards and Bishop Honda, Mr. Chiba and myself. He is to let me know what can be done in the matter. Then we called on Dr. Amerman at his office. He invited us to a lunch in a neighboring restaurant. I met Dr. Chamberlin too who has succeeded Dr. Cobb in the secretary chief. He strikes me as a very fine man. I had a good talk with him too. He has a very intelligent idea on the subject. On return home I found a telegram from Honda saying came some post office ［in］ Ocean Grove. Answered by telegram saying will come tomorrow 10:50. In the evening went to Wakamatsu with Mr.and Mrs.Ohori. Li was our host. There were Miyata and Minemura also. We had a very good Japanese dinner. We had maguro no sashimi, suimono, kashiwa and gobo no umani, ebi no yakimono, sunomono, and unagimeshi. Altogether it was a fine Japanese dinner. ミス・パニングトン、ミス・テルフォード、ミセス・ワズワースに手紙を書く。A・J・ブラウン博士に私の住所を知らせる手紙を書く。 ミスター・Oとともにジョン・ワナメイカーズ百貨店に行き、下着を何枚か買う。 長老派教会の理事会室を訪ね、日本で総合的なキリスト教大学を設立する必要性について、フルトン博士とじっくり語り合った。彼はこのアイデアに強く賛同し、長老派、改革派、メソジスト派、バプテスト派の代表者たちと、本多監督、ミスター千葉、そして私とで非公式の会議を行うことを提案した。彼自身がそのために何ができるか、知らせてくれるとのこと。 その後アメルマン博士のオフィスを訪ねた。彼は我々を近くのレストランでの昼食に招待してくれた。そこで事務局長のコフ博士の後を引き継いだチェンバリン博士に会う。非常に好人物との印象。彼とも有意義な話をした。とても知的なアイデアを持った人のようだ。 宿に戻ると、本多からオーシャン・グローブのある郵便局に来たとの電報がきていた。明日10時50分に行く旨返信する。夜、リの招待でオオホリ夫妻とともにワカマツに行く。ミヤタとミネムラも同席した。非常に美味しい日本食だった。マグロの刺身、吸い物、カシワとゴボウの旨煮、エビの焼き物、酢の物、鰻飯。全体的にとても結構な日本料理の夕食だった。

July 11th, Monday The morning paper says yesterday was the hottest day in the year. There were several deaths in the city and in other cities along the Atlantic Board. This morning it is much cooler. In the afternoon went down to the Presbyterian Building assembly to meet the representatives of different mission boards and talk over with them the pressing problems of the future of Christian education in Japan. There were present Mrs.Helsey, White and Fulton, peforsecuting? to Presbyterian Board. Dr. ［Stunley?］ of the Methodist, Dr. Chamberlin and Amerman of the Dutch Reformed. Messrs. Wood and McBee of the Episcopal Board, Mr. Morse of the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. and a few others. Honda was there too but Chiba did not come. Dr. Groucher sent a good letter. Dr. Brown’s letter came too late. I laid before them the present situation and the pressing needs of establishing a Christian university. I said there were three possibilities to accomplish this aim. 1st was the denominational, that is, for each denomination to push undertake this task. Very unwise method. 2nd was undenominational, which is to establish a Christian but independent institution like the Roberts college or the ［判読不能］ college. Very attractive but difficult to carry out unless there are some men of extraordinary wealth willing to undertake such work. 3rd way is to coordinate and cooperate, and the inter-denominational plan. That is, coordinate the existing schools and unite in establishing a university. They asked questions about the locality and the probable cost of land and the attitude of the government, what post graduate course were most needed there. Honda simply endorsed what I said and he did not speak. After listening to what I had to say they adopted a resolution in favor of such a plan as I had stated. Of course this resolution does not commit their Boards but only expressions of their personal opinions. But it means much coming from such body as this. After the meeting was over I distributed the printed plea for higher Christian education in Japan. 朝刊によれば昨日は今年一番の暑さだったそうだ。市内で数人、それ以外にも大西洋沿いの市で死者が出た。今朝はだいぶ涼しい。 午後、長老派教会ビルの会合に出席し、異なる会派の代表者たちと会い、日本のキリスト教教育の未来に関する差し迫った問題について話し合った。 出席者は、長老派のミセス・ヘルジー、ホワイト、フルトン、メソジスト派のスタンリー博士、オランダ改革派のチェンバリン博士、アメルマン。米国聖公会のミスター・ウッドとミスター・マクビー、Y. M. C. A. 国際委員会のミスター・モース、他数名。本多は出席していたが、千葉は来なかった。ガウチャ博士は良い内容の手紙を寄せてくれた。ブラウン博士の手紙は届くのが遅すぎた。 私は彼らの前で現状を説明し、キリスト教大学を設立することがどうしても必要であると述べた。そして、それを達成する方策が3通りあると言った。 1つめは、教派ごとに活動するやり方。つまり、それぞれの教派がこの目標を達成すべく別々に活動する。非常に愚かな方法だ。 2つめは、非教派的な方法。ロバーツ・カレッジや［判読不能］カレッジのような、キリスト教だが独立した教育機関をつくるやり方だ。非常に魅力的な方法だが、巨万の富を持った誰かが引き受けてくれでもしなければ、実現は難しい。 3つめは、調整し、協働していく、超教派のプランだ。つまり、既存の学校間で調整を行い、協力してひとつの大学をつくりあげる方法だ。 彼らからは、設立候補地やそのおよその地価、日本政府の姿勢、最も必要とされる大学院は何か、といった質問が出た。 ホンダは私の意見に賛同を示すのみで、自身は話をしなかった。私の説明が終わると、出席者たちは私が示したプランを後押しするという結論を承認した。もちろんこれは各教派の正式な関与を約束するものではなく、出席者たちの個人的な意見の表明にすぎない。しかし、これほどの立場の人たちから賛同を得られたことの意味は計り知れない。 会合終了後、日本におけるキリスト教の高等教育機関設立の嘆願書を配布した。

七月一日（木） 出院授業如例。 モルトケ伯来訪、礼拝ニ列席シタル後、神学部教室、書籍室等ヲ一覧シタル後、宅ニ来リ茶ヲ喫シナガラ緩談ス。本多氏ハ来ラズ、熊野氏同席ス。モルトケ氏帰リテ間モナク本多氏モ来ル。 午後、教員会ヲ開ク。教室ノ取締、臨時試験等ノ件ニ付協議ス。 夜、理事事務委員会ヲ開ク。田嶋氏解約、谷富一氏嘱托ノ件、一般修繕ノ件ニ付熟議ノ末、ランデス、ワイコツフ、熊野氏ヲ委員トナス。イムブリー氏ヲ神学部修繕ノ委員トナス。

七月二十二日（木）　曇、晴 文雄へ礼状ヲ出ス。大阪商船ハ真澄ノ為二割引ヲ為シ呉レル筈ナリ。 丸ノ内中央亭ニ開レタル原田助氏歓迎会ニ出席ス。出席者約四十名、盛会ナリキ。
