6月1日（木曜日） We decided to take the night train instead of the morning train. After calling at the Cook’s Office we went to the Legation and had another good talk with the Minister. We told him the substance of our addresses and he wanted their copies to put them in the papers here. We promised to do so. He told us that Rozdenensky with his staff was found, in one of the torpedo destroyers wounded and taken prisoner on the 29th. Papers say he is now in the naval hospital in Sasebo. Russians lost 22 ships, some of which are captured and the rest sunk. Japanese loss is only 3 torpedo boats and 400 men killed and wounded in the First Squadron. A most wonderful victory. Everybody in the street seems to be talking about the naval battle. Many of them have saluted us. Bravo Togo! Bravo Japan, or Banzai. 朝でなく夜行列車を取ることにした。クックのオフィスに寄ってから公使館に行き、再び公使と語り合った。私たちが演説の内容を話すと、公使はその写しをとって保管したいという。そのようにすることを約束した。 公使から、29日に司令長官ロジェストヴェンスキー中将が駆逐艦の1つで参謀らと共に見つかり、負傷しており捕虜になったと聞いた。新聞によると今は佐世保の海軍病院にいるとのこと。ロシア側は22隻を失った。数隻が拿捕され、残りは沈没した。日本の損害は水雷艇3隻と、第1艦隊の400名の死傷者にとどまった。この上ない大勝利である。街はこの海戦のことで持ちきりに思われる。多くの人が私たちに挨拶してくれた。東郷ブラボーである。ブラボー日本、いや万歳というべきか。
