5月27日（土曜日） Mr. Webster took us through the city stopping at the Reformed Theological School, the Depository of the Tract Society, etc, and finally to Von Szilessy’s where we had been invited to dinner. We were introduced to his family and a friend of his who is a bitter enemy of Russia and is greatly pleasant over the success of Japan. He said the Hungarians have two Kinds of Sympathy for Japan; first because they are cousins and secondly because they have a common enemy in Russia. He said he is so glad because Japan have crushed the Russians. In the evening Honda and I gave addresses in the National Museum, the old house of Peers, which has a very fine picture by Mr. Munkácsy Mihály, the famous Hungarian painter who painted “Christ before Pilate”. There were not so many people as was expected. There were, however, about 100 people of the best class and some of whom were men of prominent positions. One reason was I think, the admission fee which were Korone 4, 2 and 1. Another reason was the day was very fine and it was just the opening of the pleasant season. Great many people went to picnics, etc. This reminds me of one thing which I should not forget to put down. This afternoon we were invited to see the Tournament of 5,500 students. Von Szilessys took us there and put in on the Tribunal where the most prominent men were sitting or rather standing. There I was introduced to the President of the London House and the Minister of Religion and Education, etc. The day was beautiful and it was a very impressive sights to see the 5,500 young men march before us, each band carrying its own banner. I heard today that the Emperor gave 1,000 yen for the Y.M.C.A. in Manchuria. ミスター・ウェブスターが街を案内してくれ、改革派神学校やトラクト協会の保管庫などに寄り、最後に夕食に招待されていたフォン・シレシー家に行った。 家族や友人に紹介される。この友人はロシアを仇敵として、日本の勝利に大いに気を良くしていた。彼がいうには、ハンガリー人は2つの意味で日本に親近感をおぼえるそうだ。まず、近縁関係にあること、次にロシアという共通の敵を持つこと。ロシアを成敗してくれて本当に嬉しいという。 夜は本多と共に国立博物館でスピーチをする。ここは貴族の邸宅だったところで、有名なハンガリー人画家のムンカーチ・ミハーイによる絵画『ピラトの前のキリスト』がある。思ったほど人は多くなかった。とはいえ、100人ほどの上流・一流の人々であり、中には重要な地位についている人もいた。理由の1つは、思うに4、2、あるいは1クローネの入場料だと思う。もう1つはこの日がすばらしい好天で、爽やかな初夏の始まりであったことだ。大勢の人々がピクニックなどへ出かけてしまった。それで思い出したが、書いておかねばならないことがある。午後に5,500人の学生が出るトーナメントの観戦に招かれたのである。フォン・シレシーが案内してくれたのは「特別席」で、重要な地位の人が座り、また立って見ていた。そこで下院議長や宗教教育大臣などに紹介された。好天に恵まれ、5,500人もの若者がそれぞれ旗幟を掲げ、目の前を行進していくのは壮観であった。 天皇陛下が満州のYMCAに千円を授けられたことを本日知った。
